Kenyon Claims a Pair of Walk-Off Wins

Jack Dunn was a tough-luck-loser on Sunday at Kenyon.

Gambier, Ohio –
Oberlin College junior Jack Dunn pitched a masterpiece in game one, but got no run support which led to a 1-0 eight-inning win for Kenyon, and in game two the Lords walked-off one more time for a 5-4 win and the four-game series sweep.

Dunn scattered just five hits through the front seven frames and pitched around six walks as he left eight Kenyon base runners stranded before Tom Hardacker's RBI-single down the left field line in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the 0-0 stalemate.

All in all, the lefty Dunn worked 7.1 innings while allowing eight hits and striking out five along the way.

Oberlin's best chance to score came in the fourth inning as it loaded the bases with one out, but Lords starter Mike Kalis recorded back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam unscathed.

Ben Puterbaugh led off the eighth inning with a double for his second hit of the game, but he become one of seven Yeomen base runners that never returned home. Oberlin did manage six hits in the game, but couldn't string any together as the fourth inning was the only frame that saw more than one Yeomen base hit.

Rookie starter Jason James turned in another impressive performance in game two with five innings on the bump where he allowed just two runs while sprinkling seven hits. However, James left the game down with Kenyon clinging to a 2-1 advantage.

The Lords would extend the margin to 4-1 in the sixth on a two-out two-run single by Devin Ensign. However, he should have never had the chance to do so as Alex Cultice started the inning by reaching on an error.

With the insurance runs now tallied it appeared as if Kenyon would have no trouble closing the door with all-time saves leader Nate Fedor in to lock-up the win, but the Yeomen had other ideas as they rallied for three runs to tie the game. A leadoff single by Ben Kauder for his fourth hit of the day got things going and freshman Brad Hantler followed with a pinch-hit single to center field. With the bases now loaded a run came home on a ground out by #P.J. Carter#. A Kenyon error allowed for the second run to score and a sac fly by Henry Bloomfield got the Yeomen back to even.

Unfortunately, the Oberlin momentum was short-lived as the first two Lords hitters reached base  in the home-half of the seventh off of reliever Grady Campion. Sophomore Zach Lipshultz came in to try to limit the damage, but struggled with control problems to load the bases. After falling down in the count 3-0 to Cultice, Lipshultz battled back to a 3-2 count, but the Kenyon sophomore found some green pasture in left field to score Will Smith for the game-winning run.

Since returning from Arizona, the Yeomen have dropped eight straight games and now sit at 7-19 overall and 0-8 in the NCAC East.

Oberlin will try to snap out of it next week when it finally has its home opener on Friday afternoon when Allegheny College comes to town for a conference set at Dill Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and fans can follow all of the action via live statistics.
