Dunn & Brua Shutdown Case for a Yeomen Sweep

Jack Dunn and Phil Brua pitched Oberlin past Case on Wednesday.

Cleveland, Ohio – The Oberlin College bullpen did not need to make the short trip to Case Western Reserve on Wednesday as starters Jack Dunn and Phil Brua each pitched complete game gems to lift the Yeomen to pair of wins by the scores of 2-1 and 3-1.

Dunn, who has been victimized by the lack of run support all year long, got just enough offense on this day for his second win of the season. The southpaw scattered nine hits and two walks, but recorded eight punch-outs over his seven innings of work.

The Spartans (10-24) got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth as they used three hits to push one run across, but left two on base.

It appeared as if the trend for Dunn was going to continue again, but the Yeomen finally broke through in the top of sixth as back-to-back doubles by former Toledo St. John's Jesuit High School teammates Ryan Mouch and Ben Kauder scored Ben Master and Brian Verne.

Dunn did allow a hit in the sixth and a walk and a hit in the seventh, but was able to escape unharmed.

In the nightcap, Brua's performance was simply sensational as he stymied the Spartans bats all game long – allowing just three hits and one earned run while fanning five and walking none.

The Yeomen (10-22) didn't wait as long to get on the board in game two as they recorded a pair of runs in the top of the first. Verne, who started the game with a leadoff single to center field later scored on a wild pitch and Brandon Cantrill belted an RBI double to right center to send Ben Puterbaugh plate-ward.

Case used a pair of doubles to plate a run in the fourth, but that was all the offense they would muster, as Brua didn't allow a single hit the rest of the way.

Oberlin added an insurance run in the sixth as #P.J. Carter# dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Puterbaugh.

Verne finished the day 4-for-8, while Puterbaugh went 3-for-6 and both players scored a pair of runs.

The Yeomen return to action this weekend as Hiram College comes to town for a four-game conference set in which Oberlin will also honor its senior class. The two teams will open the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. and do it all over again on Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can follow all of the action via live statistics.
