Oberlin, Ohio – Sophomore pitcher
Phil Brua lived dangerously all game long, but went six innings to guide the Oberlin College baseball team to a 7-3 win over Allegheny in game one, but a late Yeomen rally fell short in the nightcap, resulting in a 9-7 loss.
Brua (2-4), a native of nearby Avon, Ohio, worked six-plus innings and allowed just three hits and three runs on 119 pitches – 71 of which went for strikes. In the first two innings, the sidearm hurler pitched himself into some trouble with two walks and two hit-batsmen, but was able to escape in both frames as the Gators stranded five runners and left a total of 11 on-base for the game.
Oberlin's first run of the contest came on an RBI groundout by
Jeremy Simon that scored
Ben Puterbaugh as he led-off the third inning with a single to left center.
After picking up his first collegiate hit with a double to left center, rookie
Jason James scored in the fifth off of a throwing error by the Gators shortstop.
Allegheny would make it a 2-1 game in the sixth, but the Yeomen bats came to life with five runs in the home-half of the inning to help secure the win. Oberlin took advantage of three Gators' errors in the inning and
Ben Master,
Brian Verne, Puterbaugh and Simon all picked up a RBI in the rally.
Sophomore
Ryan Mouch joined Verne with two hits for his fourth multi-hit performance of the season.
In the nightcap, Oberlin's bats were slow to get going as they had just one hit through the front six frames, but trailed just 4-2 after five complete innings. The Gators scored two in the first, but Oberlin got two in the second to tie the game as
Brad Hantler and
Henry Bloomfield each had a RBI in the inning.
Allegheny extended the gap to 6-2 in the top half of the sixth, but the Yeomen used another Allegheny error, a passed ball, a balk and an RBI groundout to manufacture two runs to make it a 6-4 game.
With one Allegheny run already in to star the seventh, Oberlin hindered their own cause with a big error that led to two more runs and a 9-4 Gators advantage.
Oberlin would rebuttal by loading the bases with nobody out to start the bottom of the seventh to chase Justin Abbott out of the game. Then on his first pitch, James Fago plunked
Brandon Cantrill for the first Yeomen run. Following a strikeout, an RBI groundout by Master added another tally and James scored on a passed ball, but the Yeomen couldn't quite complete the tall task.
Drew Mixter took loss for the Yeomen as he pitched 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs.
Oberlin and Allegheny will conclude the series tomorrow afternoon with another doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Fans can follow all of the action via
