Walk-Off Win a Part of a Yeomen Sweep

Mesa, Arizona – On their final day of spring break, the Oberlin College baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh of game one to steal a 7-6 victory and followed with a 9-2 thumping in game two take both ends of a doubleheader from Thomas College.

The Yeomen (7-11) looked very sluggish throughout game one as they trailed 6-2 heading into the final frame. However, in the seventh the first three Oberlin hitters all reached base, which setup Jeremy Simon's bouncing-ball single over the third basemen's head that plated two runs. Following a groundout by Brandon Cantrill, sophomore Ben Kauder tied the game by roping a single to right center to score Ben Puterbaugh and pinch-runner Brad Hantler. With the game now knotted at six, senior quad-captain #P.J. Carter# stepped the dish and belted a walk-off double to left field that sent Kauder home for the game-winning run.

Carter, native of nearby Lorain, Ohio, also earned the win on the mound as he worked four innings in relief – allowing just three hits and one run.

Kauder finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Master and Carter also added two hits apiece.

The Yeomen dug themselves a big hole early on as they committed three errors in the first two innings that led to five unearned runs for the Terriers.

In game two, Jack Dunn put together his best outing of the season as he worked five-plus innings of scoreless baseball. The Lake Havasu, Arizona, product struck out a season-high eight hitters and surrendered just five hits and one walk. Out of his 77 pitches, 51 went for strikes.

After silent opening three innings for both teams, the Yeomen finally got on the board in the fourth inning on a two-run inside-the-park home run by Puterbaugh as he lifted a ball deep into the right-centerfield gap.

Oberlin put the game away with a seven-run sixth that featured two-run singles by Kauder and Brian Verne.

Oberlin begins conference play on Saturday at The College of Wooster.
