OBERLIN COLLEGE SPORTS MEDICINE |  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who are the team physicians affiliated with Oberlin College?
Oberlin College Sports Medicine partners with University Hospitals (UH) and their team of physicians. The UH Sports Medicine Institute is nationally recognized for its comprehensive and integrated approach to athlete care. UH also serves as the medical provider for the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Monsters, and Cleveland Ballet.

How can my student-athlete see a physician?
After an evaluation by one of our athletic trainers, a referral will be made to a UH physician either during an on-campus injury clinic or at a UH office. On-campus clinics typically take place twice a week, depending on physician availability.

Is there a cost associated with seeing a team physician on campus?
No, there is no cost to the student-athlete for services provided during on-campus injury clinics. However, if further diagnostic testing is needed (e.g., MRI, X-ray, lab work) at a UH facility or physician's office, those services will be billed to the student-athlete's insurance.

If my student-athlete needs to see a physician in the office or have diagnostic testing done, how is that handled?
A UH athletic trainer, contracted by Oberlin College, will assist with scheduling follow-up appointments or diagnostic testing as needed.

How will my student-athlete get to and from their medical appointments?
If the student-athlete does not have access to a vehicle, there are several transportation options:
  • Request a ride from a coach or teammate/friend
  • Borrow a vehicle from a teammate or friend (if permitted)
  • Utilize Uber Health (arranged by Sports Medicine)

If my student-athlete is injured, how will they get to and from classes?
We recognize that mobility may be limited, but movement can support the rehabilitation process. If transportation is needed, we recommend that the student-athlete ask a friend or teammate for help. In some cases, Campus Safety may be able to provide assistance.

Does Oberlin College provide secondary insurance coverage to pay for the student-athlete’s medical bills?
Yes. Oberlin College offers a secondary insurance policy through WellFleet for injuries sustained during sanctioned athletic activities. This policy is secondary to the student-athlete’s primary insurance and includes a $1,000 deductible. This deductible may be reduced based on the coverage provided by the primary insurance. Once met, eligible claims are covered at 100% up to $90,000 per injury.

What is the process for submitting a claim to the secondary insurance provider?
If an injury is deemed sport-related, the athletic trainer will initiate the claim with WellFleet. Once submitted, the student-athlete can contact WellFleet directly by phone or create an online account to submit additional bills and documentation.
