TERM 2 UPDATES

Who can use the facilities?

At this time, only Oberlin College students, faculty, and staff are permitted to use the Oberlin College Recreation and Athletics Facilities.  Oberlin College ID card users only.

You must be in the college's COVID-19 testing system to gain entrance.  Emeriti faculty, alumni, parents and family members of faculty and staff will not be permitted at this time.  There will be no guest passes issued.
 
The Athletics Department does reserve the right to alter this policy based on evolving circumstances.  
 
What will be the hours of operation?
Please click here to see our 2020-21 school year building calendar.  These hours are subject to change as we continue to monitor the pandemic.  Users should continue to monitor this link throughout the school year.
 
How do I enter and exit the building?
All users must enter through the Shanks Center main entrance. Users are able to exit the building through any other door throughout Shanks and Philips. Users are not permitted to exit through the Shanks main entrance.
 
How will I be given clearance to enter the facility?
Users are to enter the building one at a time and are required to wear a facial covering that covers the nose and mouth.

Upon entering, present your ID card to the front desk monitor. The monitor will take your temperature with a touchless thermometer. Users must show their Full Measure Green Access Pass, confirming they are symptom free.
 
To reiterate, only Oberlin College ID Card holders are allowed to use the facilities. If you do not have your ID card with you, you will not be allowed to enter the building.
 
Can I use the locker rooms and showers?
Unfortunately, no. Pursuant to regulations for gyms and fitness centers set forth by the State of Ohio, these facilities will be closed indefinitely. Users should arrive dressed to work out.

The only exception applies to swimmers. Swimmers are to shower before and after using the pool. They may store their belongings in lockers that are marked specifically for these purposes.
 
Will I be able to check equipment out of the Equipment Room?
The Equipment Room is remaining closed until further notice.
The Equipment Room will not be able to provide shower towels, nor will it be able to provide locker rentals.

This policy applies to: basketballs, volleyballs, soccer balls, rackets and balls (tennis, squash, racquetball), ping pong/table tennis paddles and balls, and swim goggles.
 
Am I required to wear a mask?
Users are REQUIRED to wear a mask at all times, including when exercising in all fitness spaces and during PE/YeoFit classes. Users are required to wear a mask when exercising on any cardio machines and in the weight room. Masks are to be worn covering both the nose and mouth. 
 
Will water fountains be open?
You will have access to the bottle-fill portion of the water fountain but will not be able to directly drink from the fountain.  Please bring your own water bottle.
 
What facilities will be open?
Please note, all indoor spaces will have occupancy limits, and the fitness areas are for individual use only. Informal group or partner workouts are not permitted at this time.

What facilities will have restricted use?

INDOOR:
Mind Spa (restricted use)
Racquetball & Squash Courts (closed until further notice)
Indoor Track & Tennis Courts (varsity and club sport and PE/YeoFit class only)
Main Basketball Gym (varsity use only)
Rec Basketball Gym (varsity and PE/YeoFit class only)
Sauna (closed until further notice)

OUTDOOR:
Bailey Field (varsity and club sport use only)
Softball Field (varsity use only)
Baseball Field (varsity use only)
Williams Field House (varsity use and club sport use only)

Will YeoFit classes be open?
YeoFit classes will be offered this Spring term. The schedule can be found here. The class instructor will take and record attendance.
 
We are no longer able to provide yoga mats, straps, blocks, exercises mats, or boxing gloves for use. Patrons must bring their own equipment to classes and will not be permitted to share equipment.
 
The foam plyometric boxes and exercise balls will be available for individual use. Unfortunately, the wooden plyometric boxes, exercise mats, and the battle ropes will not be available for use.
 
What responsibilities will be placed on the users in regards to cleaning?
Users will be expected to wipe down any equipment before AND after usage. Spray bottles and paper towels will be provided. The user is to keep the spray bottle with them for the duration of their workout and then place it on a designated table before leaving the space.
 
As a reminder, the fitness spaces and equipment are for individual use only. Users must maintain 6+ feet of separation between each other at all times. Users are not permitted to share equipment, to spot each other when lifting, or to perform partner assisted lifts.
 
What responsibilities will be placed on custodial services and Rec Center employees?
There will be an employee stationed at the monitor desk in both the Shanks Fitness Center and in the Weight Room. The monitor will be responsible for sanitizing spray bottles after a user finishes their workout session. The employee will also be performing regular cleaning of all high touch surfaces in the space. This cleaning practice is to serve in addition to the responsibilities the user has of wiping down any equipment before and after use.

Custodial services will ensure the spray bottles are always full and the paper towel stands remain stocked. Receptacles will be emptied frequently. Custodians will perform cleaning of the floor space in all exercise venues, as well as regular deep cleaning of the restrooms, exercise equipment, and other high touch surfaces.
 
For staff who have offices in the building, what safety measures will they be taking?
All staff will follow the same entry procedures and policies as gym users, including entering the building through the Shanks Center, temperature check, and presenting their daily Full Measure Green Access Pass. Staff will be wearing masks at all times when in the building.
