The NCAA requires Oberlin College to certify that each student-athlete has adequate insurance to cover medical expenses from athletic-related injuries. All varsity student-athletes at Oberlin College are required to provide evidence of primary medical insurance coverage for athletic-related injuries. This coverage could be family dependent coverage or an independent personal coverage. If they are not covered under a separate medical Insurance policy, then these varsity student-athletes are
REQUIRED to purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan of Oberlin College. Starting in August 2014, in this plan the benefits for varsity athletic-related injuries are the same as other injuries. This policy does have a deductible and co-insurance amounts. Here is a
link to the current benefit schedule of this policy.
Due to the difficulty in dealing with out-of-area HMO and PPO types of medical insurance and their lack of payment, it is
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that Oberlin College varsity student-athletes purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan even if they are covered as a dependent under a parent's medical insurance policy.
The Department of Athletics and Physical Education also purchases a blanket insurance policy (Sports Policy) for varsity athletic injuries. The Sports Policy has a deductible of $1,000 per claim (injury) and a maximum payment per claim of $90,000. The Sports Policy is an excess policy, which means that all claims must first be fully processed by any other collectible insurance. Typically this is the medical insurance of the parent on which the student-athlete is listed as a dependent.
In addition, as a member of the NCAA, Oberlin College has access to the NCAA catastrophic insurance plan, which provides benefits for varsity athletes who are catastrophically injured while participating in a covered intercollegiate athletic activity (subject to all policy terms and conditions). The NCAA plan has a deductible of $90,000 and a $20 million lifetime benefit maximum. The NCAA plan is also an excess policy as defined under the Sports Policy. Additional information on the NCAA Catastrophic Insurance Plan can be found at
www.ncaa.org.
Both the Oberlin College Sports Policy and the Oberlin College Student Health Insurance Plan are subject to specific policy terms and conditions and include certain restrictions and exclusions. Please note that additional out-of-pocket costs may be associated with any insurance plan and Oberlin College assumes NO responsibility whatsoever for any medical expenses of
varsity athletic-related injuries.
