Rochester, New York – Led by a pair of top-25 finishes, the Oberlin College cross country team returned to action at the Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational, hosted by the University of Rochester at Genesee Valley Park on Saturday afternoon.
The men's team finished sixth overall with 211 points, while the women's team placed seventh with 168 points. The Oberlin women were led by a tightly packed scoring group, with the Crimson and Gold's top five runners separated by just 1:19.1.
Kicking things off in the men's 8k race, senior Will Gordon paced the Crimson and Gold, crossing the line in 25:57.6 to place 18th overall. Sophomore Cooper Tanski followed close behind, recording a time of 26:10.0 to finish 24th. Senior Piers Shirk posted a 26:58.1 performance, placing 60th overall, while first-year Kaed Egan finished in 27:32.7 to take 90th.
Rounding out the top five for Oberlin, first-year Michael Hutnick crossed the line in 27:34.3 to place 93rd overall. Junior Toby Wells-Spackman followed with a time of 28:04.0, finishing 112th, while first-year Ben Burleson recorded a 29:34.7 performance to place 167th. Senior Sam Mortensen rounded out the Oberlin men's squad, crossing the line in 31:10.3 to finish 198th.
Carrying the momentum from the men's race, sophomore Lieke Everts led the Oberlin women 6k race with a time of 23:24.3, placing 25th overall. Junior Samantha Soto followed close behind, crossing the line in 23:39.9 to finish 32nd, while senior Char Purcell recorded a 23:48.9 performance to place 36th.
Sophomore Mirabel Adams continued Oberlin's tightly packed scoring effort, finishing 46th overall with a time of 24:07.4. Sophomore Chelsea Larsen completed the team's scoring five, crossing the line in 24:43.4 to place 70th.
First-Year Elis Leppik followed close behind, posting a time of 24:50.2 to finish 76th overall, while junior Solana Pearl crossed the line in 25:04.6 to place 95th. Sophomore Zoe Engel recorded a time of 27:58.4 to finish 173rd, while sophomore June Essinger rounded out the Oberlin women's squad with a 28:35.0 performance, placing 181st.
The Crimson and Gold will return to action on October 2nd at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational in Powell, Ohio.
