Presidents Prevail Over Yeomen in Midweek Matchup

By Micah Rodriguez '27

Washington, Pennsylvania – One day removed from a conference split against Wooster, the Oberlin College baseball team dropped a midweek matchup to Washington & Jefferson, 16–5 in seven innings.

First-year center fielder Patrick Leonard led off the game with a triple lined just inside the first base line. The next batter, third-year right fielder Brady Groves, lifted a deep sacrifice fly to right field to plate Leonard and give the Yeomen a 1–0 lead.

After the Presidents tied the score in the bottom of the first, Anton Shelton led off the top half of the second with a double into the left-center gap. Shelton came around to score on a sacrifice fly from first-year catcher Ari Siegel to give the Yeomen a 2–1 lead.

Washington and Jefferson responded with a run in the second and third innings to take a 3–2 lead.

In the fourth, Leonard delivered an RBI single to right-center to knot the score at three. Leonard then stole second, allowing second-year middle infielder Ryan Robinson to score from third and give the Yeomen a lead. Groves followed with an infield single to shortstop, and Leonard came all the way around from second to score and make it a 5–3 game.

Third-year right-hander Davis Hayes got the midweek nod for the Yeomen. The Asheville, North Carolina native was solid in his three innings of work, allowing five hits and three earned runs while adding three strikeouts.

First-year right-hander Matthew Harris came on in relief of Hayes. In his first outing in over a month, Harris was very effective. The Louisville, Kentucky native struck out three in his 1.1 innings of work and surrendered two runs.

Unfortunately for the Yeomen, after taking a 5–3 lead, it was all Washington & Jefferson. The Presidents scored ten runs in the bottom of the fifth en route to a 16–5 victory in seven innings.

With the loss, the Yeomen fell to 13–10–1 on the season.

The Yeomen are back in action this Saturday with a North Coast Conference matchup with #1 Denison. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
