Yeowomen Battle, Fall to Yellow Jackets

By Roxie Freifeld ’27

Berea, Ohio – The Oberlin College softball team traveled down the road to take on the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Yeowomen battled through a neck-and-neck game one, but ultimately fell 4-3 on a Yellow Jacket walk-off. Oberlin dropped the nightcap 8-4.

The Crimson and Gold struck first in the top of the second as a line-drive from Caroline Sniffen scored pinch runner Caitlyn Crotty from third base to take the 1-0 lead. The Yeowomen held their lead and added on two more in the top of the third with an RBI bunt from senior Haley Carlson to score Aoife Shen. Carlson stole third and came around to score on an overthrow from the catcher as the team exited the inning up 3-0.

The Yellow Jackets were able to tack on three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 3-3. The score steadied through the middle of the seventh as the Yeowomen were unable to reclaim the lead. Baldwin Wallace was able to lock in the win with a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to give Oberlin the 4-3 loss.

In game two, Baldwin Wallace took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Crimson and Gold unleashed a four-run top of the third, which started with a bunt single from Shen, placing her on first to steal the next two bags before fellow first-year Anjali Singh scored her on a single. After stealing second, a rocket double from Carlson scored her to overtake the lead 2-1. Connor Fogarty's single sent Carlson to third, and she scored on a sacrifice fly from Hannah O'Connor. After two stolen bases, Fogarty stood at third base and easily scored on a single from infielder Maya Means to cap off the four-run inning, up 4-1.

Baldwin Wallace continued to rally hits through the next innings to claim an 8-4 lead. In the top of the seventh, Kailey Dunham led off the Yeowomen with a double down the left field line, but was left stranded at second base as the Crimson and Gold were unable to close the gap and ultimately fell 8-4.

The Yeowomen sit even at 17-17 heading into their final two games this Saturday, May 2, against Wittenberg, when they honor their four seniors during the Senior Day celebration. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. with game two to follow.
