Springfield, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's tennis team took the Wittenberg Tigers by storm, Sunday, April 19, winning 7-0. This boosts the team's record to 11-5 overall and an even 3-3 in the conference.
Due to Wittenberg's limited team, fielding four players out of the usual six, No. 3 doubles, along with No. 5 and No. 6 singles, were given to Oberlin by default. This advantage left Oberlin with a doubles and singles win needed for victory. Along with this lead, men's and women's players took to the courts at the same time due to the small Wittenberg teams, leading to an energetic and collaborative effort between the teams not yet seen this season.
Oberlin was quick to take advantage of the lead, widening the gap even further in doubles. Freya Rahm and Hannah Soong took a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles while Rachel Allen and Scarlett Kingston won at No. 2 doubles, 6-0.
Up 3-0, Oberlin's four singles players quickly closed out their matches. Stella Kollmansberger at No. 1 singles won 6-0, 6-0. Kingston on court three won at the same time, 6-0, 6-0. Allen, shortly after, achieved victory, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Out on her own due to limited courts,
Eva Lopez carried the team's spirit and drove the final nail in the coffin for Wittenberg, winning her match 6-0, 6-2.
After the win, Allen observed, "Everyone played really well and stayed very focused. The energy was amazing with both men's and women's teams playing at the same time."
Up next week, the Crimson and Gold anticipates an away match at Delaware, Ohio, against the Battling Bishops. Oberlin plays Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, April 25, with the match time set to begin at 12 p.m.
