Oberlin Triumphs Over DePauw

By Rowan Ing '28

Greencastle, Indiana - The Oberlin College women's tennis entered a competitive dual match against the DePauw Tigers on Saturday morning. Crimson and Gold struck hard with four singles wins to secure the conference win. This victory pushes the team's record to 10-5 (2-3), clinching a winning season, and ten-win season, for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign.

Doubles went in favor of the Tigers with doubles No. 1 team, Freya Rahm and Hannah Soong, dropping their set 6-1. Rachel Allen and Scarlett Kingston on court two competed in a close doubles set, going down 7-5. Oberlin' sole bright spot in doubles play came on court three, with Stella Kollmansberger and Olivia Wollner winning their match, 6-3.

Down 1-0, the Crimson and Gold buckled down to take four of the six points in the upcoming singles round. Kollmansberger at No.1 singles set the team on a good start, winning her singles in a lightning fast 6-2, 6-0 win. Rahm on court five made her way to victory, winning 6-3, 6-2 and landed many impressive down-the-line groundstrokes on the way. Allen at No. 2 singles encountered more trouble on her court, however, the junior put up a great fight in a 6-3, 6-2 loss.

Tied up at 2-2, the conference foes needed two of the remaining matches on courts three, four, or six to win. With Kingston, Lopez, and Guzman all down their first set, Oberlin's needed a big lift to complete the comeback.

Olivia Guzman bidded her time and made a comeback, winning her second and third sets. She took the match 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Lopez battled for the second and third sets, winning a high-pressure match point at deuce, 5-4, to clinch. Lopez won 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to secure Oberlin's match victory.

Kingston made progress in the second set of her singles, taking five games in a row and bringing her match to a seven point tiebreaker. She fell in the breaker, however, losing the match 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).

After her match, Lopez said, "I feel like we really worked as a team today. We were all extremely supportive in cheering and everyone had a lot of passion when playing. This win was huge because we lost to them last year so it really shows our dedication over the past year."

The Crimson and Gold's next match is tomorrow, Sunday, April 19. Oberlin heads to Springfield, Ohio to face Wittenberg on their home courts.
