Lacrosse Scores Golden Goal Against River Otters

Portland, Oregon – Winning their first of two games on the west coast, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team beat Lewis & Clark 11-10 in overtime on Friday evening. Mary Rodman scored the go-ahead goal for the Yeowomen, catapulting them to 8-1 on the season, tying last year's win total.

Head Coach Malory Nadrah said of the victory, "The team translated our adjustments really well after our rocky start. We fought hard and had amazing support from the whole team. Lewis & Clark is a very well-coached team that executes well, it was a great battle that taught us a lot as we move on to our last game."

Megan Hiller led the team in goals with four, while Kylie Thompson tallied a team best six points highlighted by four assists. Dominating the draw control, Oberlin won 13-22 draws with Olivia Corradi collected a career-high of seven. Defensively, Maddie Weathers had a hot game with one draw control, two ground balls, and four caused turnovers.

Janny McCormick earned the start in cage, but after the River Otters' quick start, Emily Berger came in for the majority of the game to earn the win. This marks the senior's seventh win of the season.

After falling behind 3-0 to start the game, Corradi connected with Thompson to get Oberlin on the board at the end of the first quarter. L&C responded to start the next period, but Thompson again capitalized off a teammates' pass to cut the lead in half. With five minutes remaining in the half, Hiller scored two goals in 44 seconds to bring the game within one at the break.

For the third-straight quarter, Lewis & Clark notched the first goal of the grame, but again the Yeomen responded in stereo. With a free position, Hiller found the back of the net to bring the score to 6-5. After Corradi won the ensuing draw control, Thompson connected with Hiller again to secure the equalizer, just 31 seconds later.

Sophie Ward's goal at the 4:44 mark tied the game again, but the home team remained persistent in Oberlin's building momentum.

After the River Otters extended their lead to two, Rodman and Corradi converted a pair of free position attempts to tie the game at 9-9. With 1:54 remaining, Lewis & Clark took the lead at 10-9. Despite losing the following draw control, Rodman caused a turnover in the midfield for Ward to grab possession.

After Thompson's shot at :50 was saved, Weathers came up clutch with a turnover after the River Otters' clear to give Oberlin one final opportunity to score. Clearing the ball with 11 seconds remaining, Corradi drew a foul inside the eight-meter arch for a final shot from the free position. An immediate shot sent the Crimson and Gold soaring, tying the game for the fourth time and forcing overtime.

"I was nervous because it was the last chance to tie up what we worked for. Everyone wanted to get to the finish line and prove to people who we are and that we can be competitors in and out of conference play." said the senior captain, "We didn't get to the finish [line earlier in the season] but get to the finish line today was great to prove that we can do that as a team."

Heading into sudden victory overtime, Lewis & Clark won the opening draw control. Driving downfield, L&C's Aviana Gonzalez sent a rocket that was saved by Berger. After a successful clear, Rodman committed a costly turnover on offense. However, the turnover last mere seconds as the Crimson and Gold regained possession on a Lewis & Clark turnover. Earning the chance at redemption for the turnover, Rodman snagged a feed from Thompson in the eight-meter, and sent the ball into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

"I was really excited when I scored, and proud of finishing off a great team win." The sophomore said of her golden goal, "We worked hard to get to that moment  all game long, [and we] battled through the heat and climbed back from the deficit."

Oberlin looks to complete a spring break sweep when they play Willamettet tomorrow, March 28. First draw is set to go up at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET.
