Men’s Tennis Seizes First Win at Hilton Head

By Rowan Ing '28

Hilton Head, South Carolina – Early Monday morning, the Oberlin College men's tennis team won a decisive dual match against Lawrence 7-0. They swept both singles and doubles in the first match of their spring break trip, raising their season record to 7-3.

In doubles, senior Shawn Lisann and freshman Cameron Weiss played one doubles, their high-energy styles bouncing off one another and resulting in a 6-1 win. At the same time, on the two doubles court, the team of Zain Makada and Enrique Margain made for a powerful doubles duo, winning 6-0. At three doubles, Max Brose and Oliver Knijnenburg struggled for the first four games, going down 3-1. But they quickly regained their focus and showed Lawrence's Will Lewis and Jonathan Myszka the coordination and reliability they're known for, taking five games in a row for a 6-3 victory.

From this doubles comeback, singles went smoothly for the Yeomen. Freshman Dash Smith took on the responsibility of playing No. 1 for the first time, winning in a calm and collected 6-0, 6-1 match. Lisann took advantage of the climate, tiring his opponent and grabbing a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2.

At No. 3, Sebastien Naginski also reveled in the outdoors, sending kicks and dropshots his opponent's way, winning 6-0, 6-0. Brose at No. 4 played a dependable and consistent game, also taking a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

In their first singles appearances of the season, sophomore Oliver Faranda finished first out of the singles matches in an athletic and energized 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5. It was quickly followed by third-year Benjamin Tichauer at No. 6, his game taking on a new level in the hot and humid South Carolina sun.

"[I'm] thankful for the opportunity to win a point for the team and looking forward to the rest of the season," Faranda said of his first singles start of the season.

"[Today] was a great start to the break, and we are hoping to continue the momentum into our next matches. It's good to play in the heat," added Tichauer.

Next up, Oberlin faces Augustana tomorrow, March 24. The Yeomen are set to begin at 2:30 p.m. Augustana is the second of Oberlin's three matches at Hilton Head.
