Mezzanotte Mashes, Leads Oberlin to Third Consecutive Win

By Micah Rodriguez ‘27

Berea, Kentucky – Finishing up their three-game stretch in Kentucky, the Oberlin College baseball team defeated Berea College, 12-5, to earn their third win of the season.

Leading the charge offensively, fourth-year outfielder Nik Mezzanotte went 3-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

"Just being relaxed at the plate and telling myself just to enjoy the day," Mezzanotte said when asked what helped enable his three-hit effort. "It felt amazing to get that sweep, and it shows promise for how our season will look this year. We definitely deserved it for staying in the game and not letting our foot off the gas."

Berea jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the bottom of the first, but the Yeomen responded quickly.

Oberlin knotted the score at one in the top half of the third thanks to a two-out double to left center from first-year Patrick Leonard and an RBI single up the middle from third-year right fielder Brady Groves.

First-year right-hander Matthew Harris got the nod for the Yeomen on the bump. The Louisville, KY, native gave the Yeomen 4.1 innings of three-run ball before turning the game over to the bullpen.

In relief of Harris, first-year right-hander Quinn Bamberger was stellar. The New Rockelle, NY native spun 2.2 innings of scoreless ball while striking out six.

"I felt like all of the work we've put in this offseason really prepared me to be calm and confident in such a tight spot," Bamberger said. "The support from all my teammates really gave me the confidence to go out there and just be me out on the mound."

The Yeomen momentarily lost the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Berea took a 3-2 lead, but reclaimed a commanding 7-3 lead going into the ninth.

In the top half of the ninth, the Yeomen added on five more runs to put the game out of reach. First-year James Min got the final out as the Yeomen moved to 3-2-1.

Third-year first baseman Kyle Baxt, second-year shortstop Jeffery Chen, and first-year Santiago Serrano all finished with two hits apiece.

The Yeomen are back in action on the road Wednesday, March 4 against Case Western Reserve. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
