Yeowomen Sweep Bears on the Road

Berea, Kentucky – Taking a pair of victories in a Sunday doubleheader, the Oberlin College softball team defeated Berea in both games of the twin bill on the road. Winning the first game 5-3, the Yeowomen rallied from behind to clinch the second game 10-8. The clean day puts the Crimson and gold at 8-2 overall.

In game one, Anjali Singh led the team with one run and three hits and a stolen base. Around the bases, Oberlin took seven stolen bases, led by Haley Carlson with three. In the circle, Hailey Alspach earned the start, pitching all seven innings and accumulating ten strikeouts on 81 pitches.

Opening the game with three runs in the first inning, Singh scored first after Hannah O'Connor reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Singh from second to home plate. After O'Connor stole third, the rookie advanced to home and put Oberlin up 2-0. Maya Means singled to the left field, bringing in Carlson for the final run of the inning.

Kailey Dunham notched the team's fourth, and game-winning, run of the game in the top of the second inning. After the senior reached first and advanced to second on an error, Dunham rounded the bases behind another error trying to get Wren Norris out, and added the Oberlin's total. Alspach hit the insurance RBI with the bases loaded in the sixth, scoring Caitlyn Crotty from third.

Winning the first half of the doubleheader, Oberlin saw a committee of pitchers open split the second game. Sophie Stone started in the circle, before relief from Olivia Bey and Audrey Beckerman. Throwing the final 4.2 innings, Alspach returning to the center of the diamond where she struck out seven and earned her fifth win of the season.

After the Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the first, the Yeowomen tied the game in the third with four of their own. O'Connor put Oberlin on the board with a single to left, bringing Singh to home plate. Another single to left, this time from Connor Fogarty, gave Alspach the go-ahead run. O'Connor advanced home after stealing second, just before Aoife Shen singled to bring Fogarty around the bases.

Tied at 4-4, Berea had another four-run inning to retake their lead in the bottom of the third. In the ensuing inning, the Crimson and Gold bats broke open, scoring five runs from Caroline Sniffen, Singh, Alspach, O'Connor, and Fogarty. RBIs came from Alspach, Carlson, Fogarty, Means, and Dunham.

Looking to continue what has been a record-start to the season, Oberlin takes a well-deserved break before they take flight for six contest at THE Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. Beginning on Sunday, March 22, the Yeowomen take on Westminster at 10 a.m.
