Grove City, Pennsylvania – In a thrilling overtime matchup on the road, Oberlin College women's lacrosse sophomore,
Kylie Thompson, scored the game-winning-goal against Grove City. The Yeowomen move to 2-0 on the season, ahead of their home opener this weekend.
"When we had the ball on our end [in overtime], I was feeling calm. My team had worked too hard this entire game for it to end in this moment." Thompson says of the overtime pressure, "Then once I got the ball I wasn't thinking, all I saw is I had the space and knew I had to finish."
Thompson finished with three goals and one assist, scooping three ground balls in the win. Senior
Megan Hiller led the attack with her second-straight six-point game. The Maryland native scored four goals and added another set of assists on five shots, all on cage. Classmate
Olivia Corradi also earned a hat-trick going a perfect 3-3 on goals and shots.
Defensively,
Emily Berger and
Janny McCormick split time in cage, combining for 12 stops. Berger led the team in ground balls with five, while
Maddie Darlington led the team with two caused turnovers and
Rachel Reiter collected four draw controls.
After the Wolverines jumped to an early lead, Corradi and Hiller responded with a trio of goals to put Oberlin on top. The two foes swapped goals over the second quarter before heading into the halftime break tied at 5-5.
The Hiller-Corradi duo picked up the momentum in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead. Grove City covered the three-goal deficit over the next couple of minutes, capping their run with a fourth goal to take a 10-9 lead. Reiter won the ensuing draw giving way to a pair of wide shots off the stick of Darlington. With 1:08 remaining, Thompson got loose to score the equalizer. Tied up, the contest headed into overtime.
Reiter again won the opening draw, to give the Obies the first possession. Thompson's shot flew just wide of the cage as the Wolverines collected he loose ball and began their clear. All over home transition, Darlington caused a turnover on Grove City and scooped up the garbage ball. Settling back on attack,
Phoebe Dolan passed the ball behind cage to Thompson, who outran her defender on the crease and double-faked to score the golden goal.

Oberlin returns to Bailey Field this weekend, Saturday, February 28, to open their home season against Kalamazoo. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
