Delaware, Ohio – Opening the new year against a North Coast rival, the Oberlin College women's basketball team traveled down to central Ohio to take on No. 16 Ohio Wesleyan. The Crimson and Gold fell 80-61 despite a brilliant effort from senior
Ellie Pollock-Ballard.
The senior shooter notched 22 points after going a perfect six-for-six from behind the three-point line. Pollock-Ballard also shot 8-10 from the field and added one steal to the Yeowomen's effort.
Krystal Montas added 12 points, and
Angela Kumler finished with ten. The duo combined for ten rebounds, seven assists, six steals, and three blocks.
Polloack-Ballard opened the contest with a pair of triples cut up by a jumper from
Katherine Csiszar. Pollock-Ballard hit her third three-pointer in four minutes to extend the Oberlin lead to 11-7.
After OWU scored 11 straight, Montas began the second frame with a layup to cut the Battling Bishops' lead.
Samantha Dormer and Kumler combined for five points to keep Oberlin within striking distance, but the home team continued to pull away from Oberlin.
Down 36-27 to start the third quarter,
Lily Najmulski and
Gabby Peña-Hilzen went back-to-back to bring the game within six. Ohio Wesleyan picked up their pace and stretched the lead to 14 before the end of the frame.
Needing a big push to get back into the competition, a trio of Obies strung together six-straight points to bring the score to 59-51. The Battling Bishops responded in droves and silenced the sharp-shooting Yeowomen to close the game on top, 80-61.
Oberlin takes a break from conference action to face Muskingum on Tuesday, January 6. Tip-off on the road is set for 6 p.m.
