Oberlin, Ohio – Leading the field with a career-best 27 points,
Angela Kumler paced the Oberlin College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon against DePauw. The Crimson and Gold fell 69-63 in the tight matchup, as they drop to 5-9 (1-2) on the season.
Kumler went 12-15 from the field with another eight rebounds, four assists, four steals, and one block.
Gabby Peña-Hilzen also recorded a career day, notching 15 points.
Krystal Montas also finished in double-digits 11 points. From beyond the arch,
Ellie Pollock-Ballard knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the conference contest.
Out of the gates, Oberlin and DePauw went point-for-point shooting about the same from the field. The Yeowomen finished the first quarter with a one-point edge at 15-14. A lower-scoring match in the second frame, Oberlin scored half of their points in the first 90 seconds. Tied at 22-22, Oberlin regained the after Montas stole the ball to set Peña-Hilzen up for the fastbreak layup. In the final minute, Kumler tipped in her own shot to tie the game at 26-26 before the halftime break.
DePauw broke away from the home team in the third, scoring 13 unanswered points and taking their largest lead of the night at 46-37. Oberlin opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back layups, ultimately bringing the game within two points with two minutes remining. The Yeowomen did all they could to keep within striking distance, but, in foul trouble, DePauw went 8-8 from the charity stripe to sinch the game.
Oberlin returns to the court when they head south to take on Denison, who ranks No. 16 in the country prior to the release of a new poll on Monday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14.
