Yeomen Drop Road Test Against Chatham

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Taking on Chatham for a non-conference matchup, the Oberlin College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 match to the Cougars on Saturday evening. The Yeomen move to 1-3 on their season.

Louis Gandelheid scored the lone goal for the Crimson and Gold, capitalizing on a penalty kick in the 80'. Vince Fortuna and Lukas Verling split halves in cage, with Fortuna earning the start on the road. Orlando Popkin, Hudson Gazdak, and Alexander Bejarano all played a complete 90 minutes.

Right off the whistle, Leo Pelizzari-Astle gave Oberlin their first look at goal with a shot that sailed wide left. Gandelheid struck next, but the Cougars' defense stood tall to keep Oberlin off the board. In the final minutes of the half, Christopher Plenca took aim bottom center, but again, the Chatham keeper had the answer.

The second half continued the deadlock from the first, but Chatham broke the scoring open at the 58:06 mark. Josiah Lewis found Justin Knox to break the game open and put the Cougars on top. The home team added another score before a foul by Emilio Herrera gave Oberlin the one-on-one opportunity.

Squaring up to take aim, Gandelheid sent the ball to the upper right corner to get the Yeomen on the board and cut the deficit to one. With ten minutes remaining, Oberlin battled to find the equalizer, but Herrera got his lick back when he was awarded a penalty kick in the 86'. Putting the ball away from Verling, Chatham clinched the late victory at home.

Soccer wraps up their Pennsylvania trip and returns home for their next match on Wednesday, September 10 when they head downtown to take on Case Western Reserve. The night match is set for 7:30 p.m.
