Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team got their home schedule with the night cap of the annual Oberlin Invitational. Hosting Grove City for the Friday night matchup, Oberlin battled but fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-22,25-15).
Leading the offense,
Brylie Peters led the offense with seven kills and six digs, while
Mara Geiger added six kills and a pair of aces. Splitting setting roles,
Jillian Jendsen led the team with 15 assists, followed by
Genna Gauthier with six.
The first set say Grove City jump out to an early 9-3 lead and clear control of the match. The Wolverines continued build their lead, extending it to as much as 22-13 before Oberlin found their rhythm. A pair of Geiger aces and a kill from
Lucy Goebel turned the match around and cut into the deficit. The rally halted at 23-17, and Grove City closed out the first set, 25-18.
Peters and Goebel opened the scoring for Oberlin in the second set. The duo notched kills before
Josie Macdonald gave the Yeowomen their first lead of the match at 3-2. The non-conference foes swapped points until, tied up at 17-17, Grove City made four kills to regain control of the set. The Crimson and Gold rallied from behind to bring the game to 24-21. Holding off the first set point from GCU, a kill by Alayna Dorst clinched the set and a 2-0 lead for the visitors.
In the third frame, the Wolverines opened with a nine-point run. A service error ended the drought for Oberlin, while an ace from Macdonald gave Oberlin their first sign of rhythm. Set up from Jendsen, Geiger scored on the ensuing point, bringing the score to 9-3. The Wolverines responded with another run, but Oberlin maintained their pace to stay in striking distance. Back-to-back kills from
Kate Budde and Peters brought the game within six, but Grove City caught fire to close the match on a 6-2 run.
Oberlin has a quick turnaround for their next match, tomorrow, Saturday, September 6, when they take on Adrian in the final match of the Oberlin Invitational. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
