University Heights, Ohio – Opening their conference season, the Oberlin College football team traveled to No. 23 John Carroll for the Blue Streaks' first conference game since joining the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Drew Nye earned the start at quarterback and threw for 90 yards on the day. His top target was
Miguel Garcia Garcia, who converted eight receptions into 50 yards. With two big plays,
Jacob Epps followed Garcia Garcia with 30 yards of his own. In the backfield,
Jake Hughes and
Peyton Rough shared rushing responsibilities, while
Jayden Eaton also added to the ground effort.
The defense was highlighted by a balanced effort between newcomers and veterans.
Andrew Foley co-led the team with eight tackles, compiled by four assists and four solos.
James Chikwe also had eight tackles, featuring five assists. With six tackles apiece,
Kingston Askerneese and
Hunter Green followed second for most on the team.
On Oberlin's first drive, Nye opened the run with a three-yard pass to
Connor Steele. Although connecting with
CJ Cooper II on the next pass,
Jackson Garstka had to punt it away to JCU's 37-yard line.
In the second quarter, Nye found Epps for a huge 12-yard reception to the left side of the field. Later in the frame, Epps made another catch for the largest play of the game. The Chicago native ran the ball 18 yards for a Crimson and Gold first down. Garcia Garcia made the following play for seven yards to keep the chains moving. Stopping short at the 42-yard line, Garstka punted the ball away to end the half.
The Yeomen shone in the final period of action, holding the Blue Streaks scoreless. Garcia Garcia opened up play with a 15-yard reception for a first down. Facing a 4th and 2,
Lance Slone was handed the rock for a two-yard rush to give the Yeomen a fresh set of downs. Nye got in on the action with a five-yard rush just moments later, leading the Yeomen down to John Carroll's six-yard line. JCU broke up three passes from Oberlin in their final possession, preventing Oberlin from converting and keeping them off the board.
Not scoring on their final drive, Oberlin fell 63-0 to the Blue Streaks in the conference opener. The Yeomen return home for their next game when they host Wooster on Saturday, September 27. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
