Crimson and Gold Come Up Short Against Wooster

Wooster, Ohio – Taking to the road for a weekend matchup, the Oberlin College field hockey team took on Wooster on Saturday afternoon. Although fighting a complete 60 minutes, the Crimson and Gold came up on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline. Oberlin evens out to 3-3 on the season.

Rookie Shelby Roth led the scoring drive with a goal in the third frame, assisted by Elly Scheer. Bella Tilford led the team in shots, while Janny McCormick played a full game in cage.

Wooster got the first possession, earning a penalty corner just three minutes into the match. Defending well by the Crimson and Gold backline, Oberlin blocked back-to-back shots from the Fighting Scots. Getting their first shot at goal, Scheer played a give-and-go from the penalty corner but was unable to convert the shot.

After Paloma Szyfer took a great shot at cage in the final minute of the first quarter, Samantha Finkelberg kept the momentum rolling into the first few minutes of the second. Both saved by the Wooster goalie, Oberlin continued to keep the pressure on. In the final 1:06 of the half, Wooster got on the scoreboard with a tap-in goal off the penalty corner.

Down 1-0 to start the second half of the game, Clare Kammeier took a well-aimed shot against Wooster. Another save for the Fighting Scots, Oberlin's pressure finally paid off after Scheer sent the ball across the arch to meet Roth. Just inside the arch, Roth launched the ball into the back of the cage to tie the match.

With one more period to decide a winner, Wooster took full advantage of a loose ball in front of Oberlin's cage. Sinking the ball into the net, the home team took a 2-1 lead.

The Yeowomen wasted no time responded, taking back-to-back shots in the 57'. The first shot by Tilford was block in front of cage, before Mary Rodman knocked the ricochet back towards goals. With neither crossing the goal line, Oberlin settled for the North Coast loss.

Oberlin takes a short break before hitting the road again for the next conference match. Under the lights, the Crimson and Gold take on Denison, Friday, September 26 at 7 p.m.
