Yeowomen Fight Past Battling Bishops in NCAC Quarterfinals

By James Foster '26

Gambier, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's tennis team rolled past the No. 5 seed Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops in the quarterfinals of the NCAC tournament on Friday.

No. 4 seed Oberlin got off to a hot start in doubles, taking all three sets to earn the doubles point and head into singles play up 1–0. Newcomer duo Rachel Allen and Olivia Wollner were the first to finish after a routine 6–2 win over Ohio Wesleyan's No. 3 team, Maisie Duggar and Mar Pacis. Oberlin's No. 2 pair, rookies Scarlett Kingston and Eva Lopez, secured the doubles point shortly after with a 6–1 victory over Lily Hershey and Evaleigh Garnett. In what could have been the last doubles match of her career, fourth-year Anna Pastore teamed up with first-year Hannah Soong for a 6–3 win over Riley Brokaw and Emma Pzedpelski in the No. 1 doubles match.

Playing with the motivation to keep her career alive, Pastore came out firing on all cylinders in her No. 1 singles match against Hershey. The Rockville, VA native gave up only two games for a convincing 6–0, 6–2 win.

Allen dominated the No. 2 singles match from the first point. The second-year dropped only one game in a crushing 6–0, 6–1 victory over Brokaw.

Lopez wrapped up the day for the Yeowomen after matching her teammates' first set scores. Garnett threatened to stage a comeback in the second, but Lopez stayed steady to close out the No. 4 singles match, 6–0, 6–3

Unlike matches contested during the regular season, which play out all six singles spots regardless of the current score, matches during the conference tournament are stopped once a team has reached four points. Kingston had taken the first set 6–2 over Pzedpelski and led 1–0 in the second when their No. 3 singles match was stopped since Oberlin had secured four points. Wollner and Soong did not take the court for their respective No. 5 and No. 6 matches.

With the win, Pastore & Co. move on to the semifinals, where they will take on top-seeded Kenyon College, the NCAC regular season champs, at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, April 26, at Kenyon College.
