Berea, Kentucky – Oberlin baseball swept the day against the Berea College Mountaineers. In Game One, the Yeomen dominated, winning 13-0. In game two, the Yeomen battled to earn a 6-2 victory.
Sophomore pitcher
Calvin Burkholder got the start on the bump for game one. The right-hander delivered a stellar performance, throwing a complete game shutout (seven innings) while striking out nine and only surrendering three hits.
"I was able to locate my fastball effectively and I was able to pitch off of that," Burkholder said. "I always look to stay low in the zone and it leads to a lot of weak contact." The Oberlin bats backed Burkholder, totaling 14 hits in game one.
Junior catcher
Anton Shelton, junior designated hitter
Nik Mezzanotte, freshman left fielder
Jack Braddell and freshman second baseman
AJ Senga led the way with two hits apiece.
The Yeomen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single through the left side from Mezzanotte and a sacrifice fly from freshman shortstop
Ryan Robinson.
Oberlin added on again in the top of the third. Sophomore right fielder
Brady Groves scored from third on an errant pick-off attempt to first base. With the bases loaded, Braddell was hit by a pitch and Senga delivered his first collegiate hit, a single to center to give the Yeomen a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Senga roped a triple down the right field line, scoring Braddell and Mezzanotte. A few batters later, Shelton deposited a single to center to score Robinson and Senga to make it a 9-0 game.
Oberlin added another one at the top of the sixth with the aggressive baserunning of senior third baseman
Zachary Ritts. After a leadoff single to right center, Ritts stole second and stole third before coming home on an errant throw from Berea's catcher to make it a 10-0 game.
In the top of the seventh, Oberlin got contributions throughout the lineup. Senior center fielder Zack Masnikoff singled to right, scoring Groves. The next batter, junior second baseman
Alex Gaetano singled to right center to score freshman catcher
Caden Rosenbaugh. Junior right fielder JT Schossel capped off the inning with a double down the left field line to score Masnikoff and make it a 13-0 game.
The Yeomen clinched the win after seven innings because of the run rule.
In game two, sophomore
Grayson Black took the mound for Oberlin. After a rough first inning that saw the Mountaineers score two runs on three hits, Black settled down. His day ended after 5.2 innings, giving up just two runs and racking up nine strikeouts.
"After a rough first inning, it felt great to settle in and help the team get a win," Black said. "Having my teammate's full support and encouragement, even after struggling that first inning meant a lot, and helped calm me down"
The Oberlin bats did just enough in game two to get the job done. In the top of the third, with two outs, Groves walked with the bases loaded to get the Yeomen within one. The next batter, Shelton, delivered a clutch single to center to give the Yeomen a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the fourth, freshman left fielder
Daniel Devapalan delivered his first collegiate hit, singled through the left side to score freshman catcher,
Daniel Krabill, to give Oberlin a 4-2 lead. In the top of the fifth, Shelton doubled to right center, scoring sophomore first baseman
Kyle Baxt to make it a 5-2 game.
In the top of the seventh, Oberlin tacked on again. Baxt singled through the left side to give the Yeomen a 6-2 lead they would not surrender.
The Yeomen bullpen duo, seniors
Max Wassarman and
Zachary Ritts, combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless ball while striking out four.
Oberlin moves to 2-3 on the young season, while Berea falls to 0-5.
The Yeomen will look to sweep the series tomorrow, the first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
