Women’s Basketball Ends Season at Home

Oberlin, Ohio – Hosting the First Round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed, the Oberlin College women's basketball competed against No. 5 Wittenberg on Tuesday night. The Crimson and Gold fell 60-42 to the sharp-shooting Tigers, ending their season at 14-12 (8-6).

Angela Kumler and Gabby Peña-Hilzen led the scoring for the Yeowomen, putting up nine and eight points, respectively. The duo combined for eight rebounds, all of Kumler's coming on the defensive end while Peña-Hilzen pulled for the offense. As a team, Oberlin made 17 steals, led by Kumler with six and Anora Lee with four. Lee added another five assists and four points to her performance.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but behind groundwork from Lily Najmulski, Krystla Montas, and Kumler, the Crimson and Gold took an 8-7 advantage. The slow pace carried into the second quarter, until Wittenberg broke loose on an 8-0 run. A fastbreak layup from Peña-Hilzen put Oberlin back on the board, before the Crimson and Gold opened up a slew of buckets to come to 24-17 ahead of the half.

Ellie Pollock-Ballard drilled a triple in the opening minutes of the second half, but the momentum was overturned with a Wittenberg onslaught. Facing a 13-point climb to get back in the game, Oberlin did their best to cut into the Tigers' lead, but it was too little too late as the Yeomen came up empty at the final buzzer.

With the loss, Oberlin bows out of the NCAC Tournament and will take time to rest before gearing up for the next season. Wittenberg moves on to the next round of the tourney where they will face top-seed Ohio Wesleyan on Friday, February 28.
