Oberlin, Ohio – Taking the game down to the final buzzer, the Oberlin College men's basketball team claimed victory over conference rival, Kenyon, on Wednesday night. The 68-67 win is Oberlin's fourth in a row and move them to 13-11 (5-10) on the season.
Milun Micanovic showed up for a career game, scoring 28 points and 13 points. In his fifth double-double of the season, the Crimson and Gold big went 10-13 from the first at 7-8 from the charity stripe. Finishing with ten points apiece,
JJ Gray and
Will Bousquette III combined for another three rebounds for the Yeomen.
Yuuki Okubo dished out five assists in addition to three steals and eight points.
Andrew Gannon settled in on defense where he snagged nine rebounds.
After opening the game on a 7-0 run it was Oberlin's defense that stole the show in the first half. Holding the Owls to 9-32 from the field, the Yeomen also stuffed the Owls from behind the arc, keeping them to just 4-15. The Crimson and Gold score 14 of their 31 first half points off of turnovers, in addition to 11 fast-break points. With a 23-18 lead, Micanovic single-handedly extended the Yeomen's advantage to 29-18 with six-straight points including a tip-in dunk at 5:36.
Zach Smith picked up where Oberlin left off in the second half, splashing a three in the team's first possession. Micanovic scored the next five points before Jackson Reynold tipped-in the ball to give Oberlin a 15-point lead. Slowly, the Owls chipped away at the home team's lead, eventually claiming their first lead with 50 seconds remaining. It was a pair of free throws from Micanovic that pushed the Yeomen back on top, but a rebound from
Asaan Snipes-Rea at the buzzer clinched the North Coast victory.
Oberlin returns to the court for their final match of the regular season against Wabash on the road this weekend. The game against the Little Giants will tip-off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 22.
