Oberlin, Ohio – Hosting their
Nobody Fights Alone game on Saturday afternoon, the Oberlin College football team welcomed the Wittenberg Tigers to the gridiron.
Senior
Drew Nye led the team from under center, with his top rookie targets
Miguel Garcia Garcia and
JJ Racz. The duo went 21 and 20 yards, respectively, while
Lance Slone and
CJ Cooper II also made a pair of receptions. On the ground, first-year
Daniel Pressley led the team with five rush attempts. The dual-threat of Racz picked up the most rush yards, collecting 35 yards on four attempts.
Defensively,
Hunter Green had a stellar game with 11 solo tackles, three tackle assists and one sack. The senior was a part of 1.5 tackles for loss, splitting one of his tackles with
Zheming Tang. Rookie
Jayden Eaton led the team with 2.5 tackles for loss for 11 yards.
Eaton, who was responsible for 1.5 sacks, shared a sack with
Abraham Cromartie V, a third-year lineman who also split a TFL.
James Chikwe got in on the action in the backfield as well, with a solo TFL that covered three yards.
Ako Taylor II and Garcia Garcia also racked up at least five take downs.
The punt team was led by
Jackson Garstka who totaled seven punts for 258 yards. His longest punt came in the second quarter when he sent the ball 51 yards from Oberlin's 29 to Wittenberg's 20-yard line.
The Crimson and Gold defense was stellar through the opening frame, holding the Tigers to just one touchdown, which came in the final seconds of play. On Wittenberg's first drive,
Jackson Bloomfield tackled their back up the middle of the line, providing the Tigers zero gain. On third down, Garcia Garcia broke up a ten-yard pass to force the punt team onto the field.
Oberlin defense was even better on the second time out, when Cromartie V and Eaton sacked JJ Miler for a loss of five yards on the first play. Green made the tackle on the second down and then Wittenberg's third down came up short on an incompletion that was well-defended by
Ramzey Lewis.
In the final quarter of play, the Yeomen held Wittenberg to just a field goal midway through the frame. After an interception on Oberlin's eight-yard line, the defense banded together to keep the Tigers out of the endzone. Green, Taylor II, and Bloomfield all made tackles in the effort, while Lewis broke up a pass in the endzone to minimize the damage. Wittenberg's Sumner Shroyer kicked the ball through the uprights, to score the final points of the game.
The football squad fell 52-0 to Wittenberg, and look ahead to their next contest on Saturday, November 1. Hitting the road to take on Denison, kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Granville, Ohio.
