Oberlin, Ohio - Honoring their five seniors,
Iris Archibald,
Jillian Jendsen,
Josie Macdonald,
Zeynep Kaya, and
Alira Allen, the Oberlin College volleyball team dropped a three-set match to North Coast Athletic Conference opponent Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon.
Macdonald paced the Crimson and Gold offense with seven kills and an ace while rookie Brylie Peters tallied six. Archibald added four aces and eight digs throughout the match while Jendsen recorded 14 assists and eight digs.
Highlighting the Oberlin backline, Kaya registered nine digs. Sophomore Evelyn Welton, first-year Mara Geiger, and Allen each notched a solo block, contributing to the Crimson and Gold defense.
The North Coast opponents began the first set with back-and-forth play as neither team held more than a four-point advantage. Trailing at 17-16, the Tigers delivered a 6-1 rally to pull ahead and increase the gap to 22-18. A final push from Wittenberg secured the first set 25-20.
The Tigers jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second frame and capitalized on that early momentum. Behind 22-11, sophomore Genna Gauthier set the ball to Macdonald to clinch a kill, launching the Crimson and Gold to a four-point rally. Wittenberg executed one final push off a trio of kills to claim the second set.
Holding a narrow two-point lead in the third session, the Tigers posted a five-point run, extending their lead to 17-10. Oberlin disrupted their streak with a tactful play from Macdonald and Jendsen as Macdonald dug the ball and Jendsen sent the pass over the net to catch Wittenberg off guard. Archibald registered three consecutive aces to reduce the margin to 17-14. Holding a 19-16 advantage, the Tigers recorded six of the next seven points to clinch the sweep.
The Crimson and Gold return to the court on Wednesday, October 15, when they travel to Baldwin Wallace. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
