Softball Senior Day Spoiled by Tigers

OBERLIN, OH- After celebrating their four seniors, the Oberlin College softball team lost a pair of close games to Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon. Losing game one 3-10, then game two 4-1, the Yeowomen cap their season at 2-12 in the conference and 6-26 overall.

GAME ONE | Wittenberg 3, Oberlin 0
Hailey Alspach started and took the loss in the circle for Oberlin, throwing a complete seven innings. The right-hander gave up three runs, all of them earned, on seven hits, allowing one walk and striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Loren Carter singled in her first at bat, but the rest of the lineup struggled to get a hit against the Tigers, leaving the third year on base. Down 3-0 in the third inning, Mia Brito earned the Crimson and Gold's second hit with a single to right field, but again, a pair of outs followed, ending the momentum.

In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Haley Carlson reached first on an error, keeping the Yeowomen's hopes alive. Pinch hitting, Grace Gordon flied out to left, leaving Carlson on base and conceding the 3-0 loss.

GAME NOTES
» Wren Norris led the Yeomen at the plate, going 1-for-3.

GAME TWO | Wittenberg 4, Oberlin 1
Despite picking up eight hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Wittenberg, Oberlin was unable to push across runs, as the Yeowomen lost to the Tigers 4-1 in the second game of the Saturday doubleheader.

Taking the mound for one last time, Katie Austin earned the start for Oberlin. The  California product went all seven innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on seven hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Yeowomen first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Oberlin got an RBI single from Kailey Dunham, scoring Carlson from third base.

Needing three runs in the bottom of the seventh, Gordon got on base with Carter coming to the plate. Battling through several great pitches, Oberlin was unable to keep the game alive and fell 4-1 to Wittenberg.
 
GAME NOTES
» Liz Laudicina and Gina Lombard each stole a base in the contest.
» The Yeomen out-hit the Tigers at an 8-7 clip.
» Carlson led the Yeowomen at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double.
 
Not making the NCAC Tournament, Oberlin finished their season on Culhane Field. Although the Yeowomen saw little statistical improvement from last season, Oberlin did triple their wins on the road from one to three.
