Oberlin, Ohio - There was a lot to celebrate on Senior Day as the Oberlin College baseball team split a doubleheader against the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops, winning game one 13-4 before falling 2-1 in the nightcap.
Prior to first pitch, the Yeomen honored its 12 departing team members and they certainly shined on this day.
Senior hurlers had a day for the Yeomen on the bump. Senior right-handed pitcher
Jay Aghanya got the ball in game one and immediately set the tone. The Herdon, Virginia native worked a clean 1-2-3 bottom of the first. Aghanya (2-2) ultimately got the win after tossing 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs (two earned) to accompany his four strikeouts.
Oberlin jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first when Junior left-fielder
Ethan Hurwitz decimated a one-out double off the left-center wall. This was just the start for Hurwitz, ad the Rochester, New York native went a career-high 5-for-5, with three doubles and belted team-leading fifth home run of the year. Junior third baseman
David Curtin brought him in with a two-out double in the left-center gap to give the Yeomen a 1-0 lead. Curtin, who will be continuing his academic pursuits next year at Columbia University, was 2-5 on the day.
In the bottom of the second, after another 1-2-3 inning by Aganya in the top part of the inning, the Yeomen tacked on another run. Senior catcher
Sean Livingstone knocked a single through the left side to lead off the inning. Livingston came around to score on a line drive double down the left field line by senior second baseman
Joe Strabley.
The Yeomen added on again in the bottom of the fourth. Curtin led off the inning with a single through the left side. The next batter, Livingstone, a known boiler room enthusiast, knocked a single through the left side. After consecutive flyouts, Strabley came up to the dish and delivered once again, smashing a double in the left-center gap to score Curtin and making the game 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, after a leadoff single by freshman right fielder
Brady Groves, Hurwitz detonated on a ball, hitting it over the hedges in right field to make it a 5-0 Oberlin advantage.
The next batter, freshman first baseman
Kyle Baxt, smoked a double down the left-field line, breaking the single-season hits record. With his 64th hit of the season, Baxt passed Brendan Mapes 19'. Baxt would go on to record three hits in the doubleheader, ending the day at 67 on the season.
The Battling Bishops finally got to Aghanya in the top of the sixth. OWU scored two runs on two hits to make it a 5-2 game, but both runs were unearned.
The Yeomen battled back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth as Groves tripled in the right-center gap to score Junior center fielder
Zach Masnikoff. Masnikoff finished game one 3-for-5, with two doubles, and roped his second home run of the season. The next batter, Hurwitz, hit his third double of the game down the left field line to score Groves from third and make it a 7-2 game.
Aghanya was chased from the game in the top of the seventh. The righty's final line ended at 6.1 innings, two earned runs with four strikeouts on the day. Senior
William Kennedy came on in relief and settled the game back down. Nicknamed "smoove", the Ransey, New Jersey native, worked 1.2 scoreless innings and struck out two.
The Yeomen blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh, scoring six runs in the inning. With two on, Masnikoff blasted a three-run home run into the hedges above right field to make it a 10-4 game. Later in the inning, Hurwitz added on to his stellar day at the plate, ripping a single down the left-field line to score senior shortstop
Harry Kaplan. Two more Yeomen runs came across the plate on a fielding error by OWU to make it a 13-4 game.
Senior Elliot Macre-Sadek came on to get the game's final three outs. The Brooklyn, New York native, struck out one in his only inning of work.
The Yeomen bats were finding barrels throughout game one. Oberlin ended game one with 18 hits, 13 of which went for extra bases with 10 doubles, a triple, and two home runs.
In game two,
Davis Hayes started the bump for the Yeomen. The rookie right-hander went six strong innings, giving up six hits, and two earned runs while striking out seven.
The Yeomen bats went quiet in game two. Oberlin mustered across six hits. Led by two-hit games from Baxt and Groves.
Seniors delivered out of the pen for the Yeomen. Senior right-handed pitcher
Justin Fuls delivered a scoreless inning in his first relief appearance of the season. The team captain did not give up a hit. Following Fuls, senior right-handed pitcher
Andrew Shen came out and worked a scoreless inning. Oberlin closer
Luigi Smarro came out to work the top of the ninth for the Yeomen. Smarro struck out two in his scoreless inning of work.
The Yeomen dropped game two as they couldn't find the timely hit they needed with their lone run of the game coming on a bases-loaded walk to Zachary Ritta.
After splitting, Oberlin's record now sits at 15-23, 4-12 in NCAC play. OWU's record moved to 18-19, 6-10 in NCAC play.
Oberlin is back in action for their season finale tomorrow at Muskingum. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
