Blue Streaks Down Yeomen

University Heights, Ohio - Future North Coast Athletic Conference member John Carroll University scored nine first-inning runs and never looked back in a seven-inning 25-11 thrashing of the Oberlin College baseball team on Tuesday afternoon.

Offensively, the Yeomen had 11 hits, headlined by rookie Kyle Baxt who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk. Baxt raised his NCAC-leading hit total to 47 and now has 14 multi-hit games on the season, including six contests with three or more hits.

Junior Zachary Ritts, who has been a relief pitcher his entire career, earned his first collegiate at-bats and made the most of the opportunity as he matched Baxt by going 3-for-4, but his efforts included a home run, a triple, three RBIs, and two runs scored.

Oberlin also got a pair of hits from Ethan Hurwitz and David Curtin with Hurwitz recording a double while Curtin hit his second homer of the season in the seventh en route to finishing with four runs batted in.

After the nine-run first, JCU went on to rough up a slew of Oberlin relievers for five runs in the third, one in the fourth, sixth in the fifth, and four in the sixth. First-year Jaret Cole made his collegiate debut and struck out the only two batters he faced, while senior William Kennedy allowed just one run on two hits over two innings of work. Classmate Luigi Smarro also retired all four batters he faced.

The loss marks the fifth straight for the Yeomen as they fell back to 11-14 on the season.

Oberlin will look to get back on track when it travels to Wittenberg on Saturday for an NCAC doubleheader.
