BEXLEY, OH- Getting the season started on the road, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team fell to Capital on Saturday afternoon. Led by
Abbie Patchen with five goals and an assist, the Yeowomen lost to the Comets 25-17. Oberlin moves to 0-1 ahead of their home opener next Wednesday.
Megan Hiller added four goals in the game, followed by
Audrey Koren with three for a hat-trick.
Maya Blevins was the final player to finish in double digits, supplementing her offense with a caused turnover.
Kaela Wilson,
Maddie Weathers,
Emily Shimabukuro, and Patchen all forced a pair of turnovers while Shimabukuro scooped up a team-high three ground balls.
Olivia Corradi brought in three ground balls as well, complimented by a draw control and a caused turnover.
Janny McCormick and
Emily Berger split time in cage, each tallying four saves.
After a bout of turnovers off the opening draw, it was Capital that struck first, with a shot to the back of the net at the 13:27 mark. Minutes later, Patchen scored on a free position to notch the first goal of the season for the Crimson and Gold. The momentum continued for Oberlin, with back-to-back goals in less than thirty seconds coming off the sticks of Koren and Hiller. Hiller capitalized on another free position for the Yeowomen before rookie
Phoebe Dolan found
Giuliana Urban to extend Oberlin's lead to three. The Comets responded with three straight goals, two of them coming from woman-up opportunities. With less than a minute remaining in the first quarter, Patchen broke the 5-5 tie with her second goal of the game.
Patchen and Hiller added another pair of goals for Oberlin, but the Comets began hitting their stride, capitalizing on a pair of woman-down opportunities to end on the right side of a 10-7 scoreline. Over the next four minutes, the Yeowomen climbed back into the game, beginning with a draw control by Urban. Patchen found Koren for the team's first goal, followed by
Alexis Escobedo's first score of the season off the free position hash. Woman-up and looking for the equalizer, Hiller put Oberlin back to even with Capital to end the half.
It was all Comets to start the third period, starting the half with three consecutive goals. Midway through the period, Patchen finally ended the drought for the Yeowomen after Shimabukuro caused a turnover in the midfield. Blevins, but not before Capital tallied another to maintain their three-goal advantage. Blevins scored another free position goal as Oberlin headed into the final quarter down 16-13.
After surpassing their fourth yellow card early in the third quarter, Oberlin earned their fifth and sixth cards to sandwich the beginning of the final period. With these cards now locking in a woman-down disadvantage for the Yeowomen, Capital took full advantage by scoring three goals in the first minute.
Lauren Mills and Patchen cut the lead to four, but it was too little too late as Capital dominated the final quarter for a 23-17 finish.
Women's lacrosse gets back on the field next Wednesday, February 21, when they open their home season against John Carroll. The draw is set to go up at 4 p.m.
