Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Senior forward
Camille Zinaich notched her second double-double in Oberlin College women's basketball team's road test against Carnegie Mellon on Tuesday night. The Yeowomen struggled to find their rhythm on offense, scoring just 43 to CMU's 81 points. Oberlin drops to 2-3 on the season ahead of a homecoming this weekend.
Zinaich led the Yeowomen with 11 points and ten rebounds, scoring her second double-double of the season.
Lily Najmulski also finished in double-digits behind a ten-point performance, bolstered by a pair of rebounds and three assists.
Gabby Peña-Hilzen and
Krystal Montas shared rebounding duties, each bringing in four while combining for a trio of points.
The Crimson and Gold got off to a reasonable start, battling bucket-for-bucket with the Tartans behind points from
Angela Kumler and Zinaich. After the 6-2 start, Oberlin struggled to keep up with CMU, giving up nine-straight points before
Ellie Pollock-Ballard quenched the drought with a three-pointer. Cutting the lead to six, the momentum was short-lived as Oberlin was outscored 8-2 in the final two minutes of the opening quarter.
Peña-Hilzen got the Yeowomen started in the second period behind an aggressive tip-in play. The Tartans continued to grow their lead through the quarter, marred by a trey from Najmulski.
Facing a 42-24 deficit to start the second half, Zinaich's jump shot followed by a three-pointer from Najmulski, gave the Yeowomen early hope to get back in the game. However, the defensive prowess of the Tartans increased as they found their groove, holding the Yeowomen scoreless until the final 30 seconds. Ending just the way it began, Najmulski and Zinaich tacked on the last six points for Oberlin ahead of the final period of action.
Carnegie Mellon continued their impressive showcase of defense, but
Anora Lee opened up the scoring for the Crimson and Gold at the 8:38 mark with a score from the charity stripe. A couple of minutes later Pollock-Ballard hit back-to-back jumpers, cutting into the Tartan lead. It was little much the Yeowomen could do to half the home team's offense, finished the final quarter scoring just eight points.
Oberlin returns home to reset their game plan and snag a win before heading into the holiday break. Returning to Philips Gymnasium, the Crimson and Gold host Penn State-Behrend this Saturday, November 23 for a 2 p.m. tip off.
