Oberlin Falls to Tigers in Overtime

SPRINGFIELD, OH - Alyson Jefferson hit the game-tying free throws with 12 seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime, but the Oberlin College women's basketball team was outscored 13-4 in the extra period, ultimately fell 71-62 to Wittenberg on the Wednesday night. Oberlin falls to 3-4 in conference play, and 12-6 on the season.

The Yeowomen saw two players score in double figures, led by Jefferson with a career-high 23 points and eight rebounds. Camille Zinaich tacked on 19 points, nine rebounds, and two steals, while Krystal Montas added four points.

Jefferson pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up 11 second-chance opportunities for Oberlin. The Crimson and Gold defense proved a problem for the home team, forcing 13 turnover. Those takeaways turned into 12 points, guided by Zinaich's two steals.

How It Happened
Oberlin struggled out of the gate, falling behind 23-13 to the high-octane offense of the Tigers. The Crimson and Gold reset for the second period, going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Zinaich, to narrow its deficit to 23-20. Wittenberg responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Yeowomen trailing 37-30 heading into halftime.

Oberlin came out of halftime on fire, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Gina Lombard, to tie things up at 37 with 7:37. By the time the end of the third quarter rolled around, neither team was able to assert control and the game remained tied at 41-41 entering the fourth. Oberlin played well near the basket, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint. In the final minute of regulation, Zinaich hit a jumper to keep the Yeowomen within striking distance. With 12 seconds to go, it was a pair of free throws by Jefferson to send the game into overtime.

Despite taking the lead four times in the fourth, Oberlin was unable to capitalize off their momentum, as Wittenberg opened the extra period on a 9-2 run. The Tigers maintained their control of the game as Oberlin finished on the wrong end of 71-62 final score.
