Softball Set Aside at Wittenberg

Springfield, OH - The Oberlin College softball team dropped both ends of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, falling 3-1 and 6-1 at Wittenberg University.

Oberlin's Hailey Alspach and Wittenberg's Julia Hall were locked up in a pitcher's duel for most of game one.

The Tigers had two of their five hits in the first inning of the lid-lifter to grab a 1-0 lead but there were zeros across the board for both teams in innings two through four.

A leadoff walk in the fifth set the table for Lilly James' two-out two-run center give Wittenberg a 3-0 cushion.

Oberlin didn't muster its first hit of the game until the sixth inning when Lalli Lopez poked one into right field. Mia Brito and Alaina Di Dio each singled in the seventh, and later in the frame first-year Haley Carlson plated the team's lone run on a sac fly to center to score pinch runner Katie Austin.

Alspach (4-7) went the distance for Oberlin, surrendering three earned runs on five hits and three walks to go along with five strikeouts, marking the sixth time this season she has had five or more punchouts in a game.

The Yeowomen scored in the top of the first inning in the nightcap as Maria Chutko led off with a single and would later come in to score on a single to left by fellow first-year Kailey Dunham.

Unfortunately, two hits and a costly error on Oberlin in the home-half of the first put Wittenberg right back out in front, 2-1.

The Tigers would pound out four hits in the third to tack on two more runs before leaving no doubt in the eventual outcome with another pair in the fifth.

Despite having seven hits, Oberlin failed to string anything together to produce more runs. Dunham and Daisha Bouknight each had two hits in the loss.

Austin (3-7) worked five innings inside the circle, giving up nine hits while walking just one and striking out two. Of the six runs she was tagged with, just two were earned.

Oberlin fell back to 7-15 and 2-4 in the NCAC.

Please note of the upcoming schedule change where instead of traveling to Capital University to play on Monday, the Comets will now come to Oberlin to play a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m, at Culhane Field on Tuesday, April 11.
