Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Oberlin Falls in Overtime on Senior Day

Oberlin, Ohio – After celebrating seniors Ellie Jensen and Frances Wilson during the pregame, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team battled through a neck-and-neck game before falling to their NCAC foes 17-16 in overtime. The loss shuts down Oberlin's hopes of a post-season run and completes the Yeowomen's season at 7-9 and 1-5 in conference play.

In what was a career game for the third-year attacker, Abbie Patchen tallied seven goals on eight shots, while capitalizing on all four of her free-position attempts. Megan Hiller and Audrey Koren also finished with multiple goals as three and two, respectively. Senior Jensen got in on the action with an assist and a team-high seven draw controls.

First-year keeper Janny McCormick tallied a career-high and record-setting 20 saves in the match. The save count ties her at fifth all-time for most saves in a single game. Supporting the defense, Lauren Mills brought in four ground balls while leading the team with a pair of caused turnovers. Olivia Corradi scooped up a team-high five ground balls as she led the charge for the Yeowomen to bring in more ground balls and cause more turnovers than the Fighting Scots.

As the game got underway, Patchen put the Crimson and Gold on the board first before a four-goal blitz in 60 seconds gave Oberlin a 4-2 lead. An own goal by Wooster extended that lead to three but not without a response from the visitors to come back within two,

Rallying for a 5-1 run in the second, the Fighting Scots pulled ahead 8-6. A free position shot by Emily Shimabukuro cut the run as Oberlin looked to resettle before the half. A last-second goal from Alexis Escobedo brought the Yeowomen within one at 9-8 headed into the halftime break.

It was a battle of the defenses where McCormick shined, holding Wooster off the board for nearly 12 minutes. At the 5:22 mark, Hiller tallied her 35th goal of the season and the equalizer in the tight conference matchup. It was Patchen on a man-up opportunity that regained the Crimson and Gold lead.

Two straight Wooster goals in the ensuing possessions saw a two-goal response from the third-year attacker to bring the game to 12-11 headed into the final quarter.

Oberlin pulled ahead by as many as three goals in the final ten minutes, but the Fighting Scots never let up and added four goals for the 16-15 lead. Another free-position shot by Patchen tied the game and rallied the Yeowomen as they looked to take the leaf for the win.

After a turnover by the defense, Oberlin's McCormick found herself one-on-one with Wooster's Jill Murray. With 25 seconds remaining in the game, McCormick stood tall for a low-shot save to keep the Yeowomen in contention. Oberlin's Giuliana Urban forced a turnover in the final seconds as the game headed into overtime.

The Crimson and Gold goalkeeping continued to impress as McCormick made a pair of key saves in the first OT period before clearing the ball downfield to set Hiller up for a buzzer-beater shot. Unable to connect with cage, the Yeowomen began 2OT the same way they ended it, with a draw control by Corradi and a clean shot on cage by Katie McMorris. A save from the Scots gave the visitors the last possession they needed as they scored the golden goal and stole the game from Oberlin.

With a heartbreaking loss, Oberlin says goodbye to their two seniors and will finish sixth in the conference. The Crimson and Gold now set their sights on the 2024 season, where they look to improve upon their '23 record.
