Greencastle, Ind. – After taking down the Little Giants in a close regular season match, the fourth-seeded Oberlin College men's tennis team fell to #5 Wabash in the first round of the NCAC Tournament. 5-4. The loss moves the Yeomen to 10-8 overall, while finishing 4-3 in conference action.
In doubles action, Wabash earned the first point after taking out the No. 2 team of
Sebastien Naginski and
Shawn Lisann 8-4. The Yeomen duo of
Sean Billerbeck and
Rohan Gold tied the match in with a victory in the top doubles slot 8-4 before
Grant North and
James Dill took the No. 3 doubles match to a tiebreaker. The upperclassman tandem fell 8-7 (7-2) as the Little Giants controlled a 2-1 game.
The momentum for Wabash continued as Naginski fell in the 4 slot, 6-1, 6-2, followed by Lisann (6-2, 6-2) in the No. 3 singles. Down 4-1, Gold kept the Crimson and Gold's hopes alive with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Alvaro Alonso-Sanchez. A 6-4, 6-2 victory by Dill brought the Yeomen within one at 4-3 before Billerbeck battled for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 win. Down to the final match,
Sam Topper stood tall against Liam Grennon, but the Little Giant overcame the senior 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the victory and move Wabash on to the next round.
With a 5-4 loss, Oberlin finishes their season pending any bids to the NCAA Tournament. The ten wins are an improvement on last year's seven wins and are the first time the team has won ten or more games in a season since 2017-18 when ther finished d11-10.
