Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College softball team concluded the 2023 season in thrilling fashion, walking-off with a 4-3 nine-inning come-from-behind victory over the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots.
The two foes were level at 1-1 after seven innings of play and the Scots would push across a pair in the top of the ninth, but the Yeowomen wouldn't go down without fight - plating three runs in the bottom of the ninth to secure their ninth win of the season to surpass last year's wins total.
Playing in their final games, seniors
Lalli Lopez and
Kathryn Beeman got the rally rolling as Lopez led off with a single before Beeman belted a double to the gap in right center. Rookie sensation
Maria Chutko would then drive in Lopez to trim the gap to just one. After
Alaina Di Dio was robbed of a base hit, first-year
Haley Carlson came up clutch with a game-tying RBI single that scored Beeman.
Mia Brito kept the train moving with Oberlin's fourth hit of the inning to load the bases with two outs for
Loren Carter, who delivered her second walk-off winner in as many weeks as she poked a line drive into center field to score Chutko for the win.
Oberlin pounded out a season-high 17 hits in the victory, led by Brito's 4-for-5 performance. Chutko finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs while Beeman, Carter, and
Haley Bartsch each had two hits in the game.
Katie Austin (4-12) was impressive inside the circle, battling her way through nine innings as just two of the three runs she allowed were earned.
Oberlin had plenty of chances throughout the game to get on the board but a plethora of base-running miscues took the Scots off the hook multiple times, but it was better late than never in the seventh as Chutko came through with a two-out RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. The Yeowomen nearly won it regulation as Di Dio followed with a single to right but
Maya Means made too wide of a turn coming around third and was ultimately thrown out to end the inning.
In game one, the Yeowomen had just four hits as the Scots were able to post single tallies in the second, fourth, and six innings before tacking on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Chutko, Dio Dio, Carlson, and Carter each had a hit for Oberlin in the setback.
Oberlin finishes the season at 9-25 overall and 4-10 in the NCAC.
