Clermont, Florida – The Oberlin College softball team split their day two games, losing their first to Lawrence 7-5, then winning their second in five innings by a score of 10-0. The 1-1 day moves Oberlin's season record to 2-6.
Showing off the team's youth, Oberlin saw five first-years start in the day's first game;
Hailey Alspach,
Daisha Bouknight,
Maria Chutko,
Kailey Dunham, and
Maya Means.
Veteran pitchers
Katie Austin and
Jess Friedman split time on the mound, not giving up any walks and combining for three strikeouts. Dunham paced the offense with a trio of hits, while Chutko brought home three runs.
The Yeowomen were the first to get on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Carter singled to center field, bringing Dunham home. The defense struggled through the meat of the game, committing errors that set them behind by as much as six in the early half of the fifth inning.
Oberlin looked to turn things around when Chutko singled up the middle to bring Friedman home. Chutko came in clutch again with a 2RBI triple that brought the score to 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh. The rookie returned home off a hit from
Mia Brito, but the run was too little too late for the Yeowomen on the wrong end of a 7-5 final.
In game two, rookie Alspach looked automatic on the mound, holding onto a no-hitter through four innings. In her first career win, the California native struck out nine batters before
Calliope Lissak came in for relief to close out the game on an efficient 11 pitches.
The bats were as hot as the sun in the early afternoon matchup with 14 hits through five innings. Both
Alaina Di Dio and Carter accounted for three hits while Carter added four RBIs. Oberlin made quick work of Keuka in their second meeting, run-ruling the Wolves 10-0 in five innings.
Di Dio got the scoring started with an infield single that allowed Chutko to sprint home. A 2RBI from Carter put Oberlin up 3-0 after the first inning, but the Yeowomen extended that lead to seven behind a trio of stolen bases in the third. A single to left field off the bat of Di Dio gave Oberlin the 8-0 lead they needed to force a run-rule victory, but the Yeowomen added two more insurance runs to secure the 10-0 win.
In holding Keuka scoreless, Oberlin records their first shutout victory since the team beat Sewanee 1-0 in 2018.
Oberlin returns to the diamond after a well-deserved day off on Thursday, March 23 for a pair of games in Winter Haven, Florida. Beginning with Wisconsin-Platteville at 2pm, Oberlin then takes on Washington and Jefferson at 4:30pm. A live stream for the games is available
