Tucson, AZ - The Oberlin College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at the Kino Sports Complex, falling 12-2 and 10-4 to St. John's (Minn.)
Oberlin's pitching staff struggled with command throughout both ends of the twinbill, combining for 20 walks and three hit batters over 14 innings.
Game one was basically over after the first inning as the Johnnies scored eight runs in the frame on just three hits.
Oberlin scored in the top part of the first inning as
Max Anastasio sent a hard-hit line drive up the box to plate
Jake Blozy. The Yeomen would get their second run of the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by
Max Cairo.
The Yeomen finished the lid-lifter with just five hits - two of which came courtesy of Anastasio.
Oberlin started game two off on the right foot as Blozy led off the contest with a home run over the wall in right.
Ethan Hurwitz followed with a sac fly and Cairo would pick up an RBI on a groundout to second to stake Yeomen starter
Jay Aghanya to a 3-0 cushion.
He would eventually depart with a 3-2 lead after four innings of work as his pitch count ballooned to 104 but not before he fanned five, walked four, and scattered five hits.
After tying the game at 3-3 with a single tally in the fifth, the Johnnies would rough up the Yeomen bullpen for two more in the sixth before leaving no doubt in the outcome with a five-run seventh.
Oberlin would score its final run of the game in the home half of the seventh on a
Joe Strabley opposite-field single to right that scored Anastasio.
The Yeomen are back in action tomorrow against Caltech with first pitch set for 10 a.m. MST / 1 p.m. EDT.
