Oberlin, Ohio - Oberlin College Director of Athletics
Natalie Winkelfoos has announced that Head Softball Coach
Sara Schoenhoft is transitioning into a new role at the College as the associate director of campus recreation and will no longer serve as head coach.
Schoenhoft, who recently completed her seventh season at the helm of the softball program, has overseen the athletics department's physical education offerings as well as its robust YeoFit wellness programing. In this new role she will expand her duties to include club sports and intramurals as well as additional programming within the office of student life.
"Without a doubt, Sara elevated the softball program during her tenure as our head coach. She is leaving it stronger than she found it. We are grateful for her leadership and fortunate that she will be using her strengths to bolster wellness programming. Sara's familiarity and experience with Oberlin will be an asset to the entire campus community as we partner with Student Life to expand our recreational opportunities.
Schoenhoft has led the most successful run in the history of the Oberlin softball program, leading the team to 12 wins in 2017 and 2019, which is the second-highest total in any season since the inception of the program in 2000.
Throughout her tenure, Schoenhoft mentored single-season hits leader
Cat Moruzzi who hit a program-best .472 in her career and ranks fifth all-time in total hits with 125 despite missing nearly two full seasons due to the pandemic.
Schoenhoft also instructed Emma Downing '19, who is second in program history in career hits (158), first in stolen bases (48), and second in home runs (13).
In addition to guiding Moruzzi to all-region honors two times, Schoenhoft also coached a plethora of All-NCAC honorees in her career.
"I have loved my time coaching at Oberlin, and I am excited to transition to my new role and help invigorate recreation and wellness on campus," Schoenhoft said. "I will forever be grateful to Natalie, Creg and the rest of the department for supporting me in my tenure as the softball coach and look forward to continuing to partner with the athletics department through YeoFit and the PE curriculum, while also partnering with student life and fostering new relationships across campus."
A national search for her successor will commence immediately.
