Wooster, Ohio - The Oberlin College baseball team gave the College of Wooster Fighting Scots all they could handle but in the end it wasn't enough as the Scots eluded the charge by winning 5-4 in walk-off fashion before holding on in the nightcap, 5-3.
Oberlin out-hit Wooster 19-17 on the day and really out-played the Scots for much of the 18-innings but just couldn't finish the job in the end.
In game one, a misjudged ball in the outfield in the home half of the first inning allowed the Scots to take an early 1-0 advantage and it appeared as if they were going to add on in the second, loading the bases with nobody out, but
Jacob Thompson was able to escape the jam unscatched.
Oberlin would even the count at 1-1 in the top of third when freshman
Max Cairo came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to center to score classmate
Harry Kaplan after he led off the frame with a walk.
A run-scoring groundout in the fourth put the Scots back out in front and Thompson would get the first two outs in the fifth before giving way to rookie
Leo Rochman. Thompson departed after allowing just two runs on three hits and three strikeouts but his day was ultimately shortened by seven walks.
Wooster would threaten again in the sixth, loading the bases but Rochman picked up a key punchout to get out trouble.
The Yeomen put Rochman in line for the win with a three-run seventh as
Jake Freed delivered a clutch two-out, two-run double to the gap in left to give Oberlin the lead and
Alex Vaughan later beat-out a play at first to allow Freed to come home to make it 4-2.
Alexander Norris would keep the Scots off the board in the eighth and the Yeomen turned to
Vince Dolcemaschio to lock down the save in the ninth but things certainly didn't go as planned as a double, walk, and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with nobody out. Tyler Chumita would then follow with a game-tying double before freshman pinch hitter Nick Pett poked the walk-off winner to right to leave the Yeomen heartbroken.
Wooster's Corey Knauf left with the lead after six innings, spriking six Yeomen hits to accompany his four walks and five punchouts. Ethan Samangy, who recorded the final two outs of the ninth, got the win for Wooster while Dolcemaschio fell back to 2-4 for the Yeomen.
Oberlin out-hit the Scots 10-7 in back-half of the twinbill but just couldn't find the timely hit when it needed it most.
The Scots scored two in the first but the Yeomen would get on the board in the third on a backside single by Cairo that plated Kaplan.
The Yeomen would take the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth as Kaplan belted a RBI single to left to score
Chris Wolfe and then Kaplan would later come across on another run-scoring single by Cairo to put the Yeomen in front 3-2.
However, the Scots would post single tallies in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to reclaim the lead.
Oberlin would put two aboard with one out in the ninth but Pett came on to pitch to shut the door and preserve the win for Wooster.
Ian Ashby (2.0), Jakob Justin (3.1),
Ben Brewster (1.2),
Jay Aghanya (1.0) combined to allow just seven hits and three walks while racking up six strikeouts in the loss.
The Yeomen return home to host Wabash College on Saturday with the first pitch of game one set for noon.
