Baseball Falls at Mount Union

Alliance, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team out-hit the Mount Union Purple Raiders 16-12 but the final score didn't end in the Yeomen's favor as they fell 14-9 on Wednesday afternoon.

Jacob Thompson led the Yeomen at the plate as he went 3-for-5. Yianni Gardner and Jake Freed each had two hits and two RBIs, while Max Anastasio and Chris Wolfe also each added a pair of hits in the loss.

Mount Union scored six runs in the home half of the first inning but an RBI single by Harry Kaplan and a two-run error in the second by Mount trimmed the deficit in half.

After the Purple Raiders got those three runs back in the bottom of the second, the Yeomen trimmed the lead down to just two with a four-run fourth. After an RBI ground out by Jake Blozy, Freed and Gardner each drove in a run to get Oberlin back into the ball game.

Unfortunately, Mount would break the game open with a five-run sixth to create a significant amount of breathing room.

Oberlin pushed a pair across in the eighth, but left the bases loaded and did not threaten in the ninth in what was their sixth straight loss.

Thompson took the loss on the mound as he worked the front two innings, allowing nine runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk.

The Yeomen are back in action at home on Saturday as they open conference play with a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan University. The first pitch is set for high noon.
