Game Recap: Baseball |

Yeomen Drop Split Doubleheader on Friday Night

Auburndale, FL - After getting their games rained out on Thursday, the Oberlin College baseball team returned to the diamond on Friday, falling 12-1 to Crown College before dropping a 7-4 decision to Mount Union.

Crown Recap
The Storm jumped all over the Yeomen from the onset, scoring in each of the first five innings and never looked back.

Some tough luck early for starter Ian Ashby resulted in his pitch count being inflated as he got through just 2.1 innings but not before striking out six. However, lots of extended at-bats resulted in his departure with 84 total pitches.

Crown scored two in the first and would add on three in the second to claim a 5-0 lead. Oberlin would surrender two more in the third and a pair of home runs contributed to a four-run fourth to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.

Oberlin mustered just four hits in the game, two of which came off the bat of freshman Jake Blozy who scored Oberlin's lone run of the game as he came across the dish on Jacob Thompson's two-out single to left field in the fifth.

Mount Union Recap
After an uncharacteristic start that resulted in two runs coming across, Oberlin starter Vince Dolcemaschio settled in and kept a potent Purple Raiders lineup at bay.

However, the sophomore from Los Angeles, California, would depart after five innings with 96 pitches and a 3-0 deficit as he was tagged with his second loss of the season. He struck out three but battled through command issues and a skating strikezone to post five walks.

Purple Raiders' pitching was impressive as starter Dwayne Sumler allowed just two hits and fanned eight through the front six innings. Ryan Osman added six more punchouts over the final three innings to earn the save.

Oberlin would take advantage of some sloppy defense by Mount Union to post a pair of runs in the sixth, trimming the gap down to one at 3-2. Max Anastasio scored on a wild pitch and moments later a passed ball on a strikeout allowed Jake Freed to score after he singled earlier in the inning.

Unfortunately, the Yeomen were unable to post the shutdown inning they desperately needed as the Purple Raiders struck back for four runs in the home half of the inning on just one hit. The damage was certainly self-inflicted as Mount Union took advantage of three walks, two errors, a balk, and a wild pitch in the inning.

Oberlin would get one tally back on a sac fly by Anastasio and would add on one more in the ninth on a bases-loaded catcher's interference but it wouldn't be enough to impact the final result.

Each team had six hits in the game with Freed leading Oberlin with a pair.

Due to impending weather, tomorrow's game against Mount St. Joseph will now start at 12:15 p.m.
