Oberlin, OH – Looking to take victory against the top-team in the NCAC, the Oberlin women's basketball team fell short against the nationally ranked DePauw on Saturday afternoon. The #13 Tigers took victory in 51-41 fashion to remain undefeated in conference play. The loss moves the Yeowomen to 17-3 on the season while holding a 10-3 record in the NCAC.
Coming from an offensive rebound from
Camille Zinaich, Oberlin got on the board first with a layup from rookie forward. A quick response put the Tigers up 8-2 before
Alyson Jefferson went 2-2 on free throws close the gap. Only one more basket came for Oberlin before the quarter closed, this time off the hands of
Maggie Balderstone to put the game at 14-6.
In what was the lowest scoring quarter this season, the Yeowomen responded with lockdown defense to open the second period and went 8-2 over the first five minutes. A close offensive battle, a jumper from
Sammy Spanier brought Oberlin within two but, hitting their final two shots of the half, DePauw held down their lead, 24-18 at the half.
Needing to come out fast in the third quarter,
Bryana Woodard answered the call with a layup 23 seconds in to put the score at 24-20. Minutes later, Zinaich put up back-to-back baskets before
Gina Lombard found Woodard under the rim for a layup. In the final minute of the quarter, Woodard got a layup to bring the score to 35-32 ahead of the final period of action.
Scoreless through the first couple minutes of the fourth quarter, DePauw and Oberlin swapped shots at the 7:17 mark. Midway through the period, Spanier pulled up for a three-pointer to make it a one possession game. Oberlin gave up a pair of layups in the ensuing minutes to fall back 45-39. Unable to come back, the Yeowomen lost to the nationally ranked DePauw Tigers, 51-41.
The Yeowomen travel for their next game on Monday, February 14 against the Wooster Fighting Scots. The tip-off between the NCAC foes with be at 7pm with live stream available
