Huntingdon, PA – The Oberlin College women's basketball team didn't skip a beat after coming off 24 days of rest as they dominated Juniata in the opening game of the Comfort Inn Classic on Friday night. In the 71-55 thriller,
Bryana Woodard put up 21 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. The Yeowomen move to 6-4 overall before continuing the classic tomorrow.
Notching her first double-double of the season and fourth of her career, Woodard also matched a season-high with four blocks. Right behind her was
Gina Lombard with 14 points highlighted by a quartet of three-pointers.
Juniata got the game going from tip-off, scoring the first pair of points. The Eagles maintained their lead throughout the opening quarter until a trey from Lombard tied the game before
Kendal McCall hit a jumper in the paint to put Oberlin in front 8-6 but it was knotted at 10-10 following 10 minutes of action.
The Eagles hit another three to start the second period as the Yeowomen battled to keep a close game. Swapping buckets, Oberlin was up by as much as three points in the quarter before the host team bounced back to hold the 27-24 advantage at the half.
The Crimson and Gold came alive in the third period as Woodard put away back-to-back buckets. Oberlin's dominance continued as they kicked it into high gear with a 28-6 run. Highlighted by a three-straight Lombard triples, the Yeowomen put up 35 points while shooting 62% from the field and 63% from behind the arch. Up 59-41 headed into the final quarter of play, Oberlin closed the game in style with another three-pointer, this time coming from
Ellie Pollock-Ballard.
The 71-55 victory is the team's fifth win this season that has come by double-digits.
