Oberlin, OH – Looking for the first season sweep of the Tigers since the 2017-18 season the Oberlin women's basketball team hosted Wittenberg at Philips Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The midday matchup proved to be well worth the wait as the Yeowomen battled with a fast-paced Tigers offense to secure the 67-56 victory. The Yeowomen improve to 15-1 on the season and boast an 8-1 record in NCAC action.
Although a slow start to the game,
Sammy Spanier hit a three-pointer to get the Yeowomen on the board. Holding the Tigers to 5-15 from the field and 0-5 from behind the arc, the Yeowomen kept Wittenberg at bay. In the final minutes of action, sophomore shooter
Alyson Jefferson capped the quarter with back-to-back three-pointers.
Looking to pad their lead, Jefferson and
Camille Zinaich each tallied a jump shot of their own to make the score 19-14. At the 6:43 mark,
Gina Lombard knocked down her first three-pointer of the night before Wittenberg responded with one of their own to tie the game. At 22-22, the two teams matched baskets until
Bryana Woodard led Oberlin on a 7-0 run. Not backing down, Wittenberg's Kelsey Ragan pulled up for a pair of treys at the buzzer to bring the Tigers within one of the Yeowomen. Headed the locker rooms, Oberlin led the game 31-30.
Jefferson got the second half started with a jumper in the paint, followed by rare shot from behind the arc from Woodard.
Rowan Smith, Zinaich, and Spanier all got in the scoring effort, tallying baskets of their own within the paint. The Crimson and Gold maintained their lead through the final minutes of the quarter and extending it with a layup at the buzzer from Spanier.
Headed into the final quarter of action up 53-47, the Yeowomen pushed for more as Woodard earned a foul in the effort. With the opportunity for a three-point play, Woodard capitalized and hit nothing but net on the free-throw. The Tigers never got close in the final quarter, shooting 25% from the field and tallying less than ten points. As the game expired, Zinaich put the seal on the game with a jump shot to put the Yeowomen's lead at 11. The 67-56 victory gave Oberlin their seventh-straight win.
The Yeowomen hit the road for the first of a three-game road stand as they travel to Delaware, Ohio to take on Ohio Wesleyan. The Wednesday, February 2 matchup will begin at 6pm with live stream available
