Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yeowomen Cruise Past Terriers in First Game of New Year

Oberlin, OH – After taking an unprecedented 27 days off from competition, the Oberlin women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Hiram with an 86-59 win on Tuesday night. Freshman Camille Zinaich paced the way for the Yeowomen, putting up her first career triple-double. The young team now boasts a 10-1 record on the season and improve to 4-1 in the NCAC.

The Yeowomen came out with fire, starting the game with five-consecutive three-pointers coming from Sammy Spanier and Gina Lombard. A commanding lead of 17-7, the Oberlin squad maintained their pace with an 11-2 run to close out the opening quarter. Spanier accounted for an impressive 11 points in the first period of play.

Oberlin kept their momentum rolling into the second quarter as Zinaich drove for a layup in the early seconds. A minute later, Lombard added to her high-scoring night with another three-pointer to put Oberlin ahead by 17 points. Not slowing down, Bryana Woodard and Zinaich notched back-to-back layups as the Yeowomen extended their lead to 21. Needing to find their way back in the game, the Terriers battled for eight points over the next couple minutes, but the Yeowomen retaliated and held strong to their double-digit lead as the half expired.

Up 40-28 and looking for more, Spainer opened the second half just as she did the first, sinking a long shot from behind the arc. Getting comfortable in the wings, Jaedyn O'Reilly added to the score to put Oberlin back up by 20. The Yeowomen continued to overpower Hiram with jumpers from Lombard and Zinaich before Kendal McCall brought the score to 56-32 with a layup. Slowing down over the final minute of the quarter, the Yeowomen held the Terriers at bay to head into the fourth up 59-43.

Lombard kept the opening three-point theme alive in the fourth quarter to create an 18-point gap ahead of the Terriers. In the next minutes, Maggie Balderstone knocked down their first bucket of the game right before Lombard deposited another three for Oberlin's largest lead of the night. Coming out of a timeout, the Terriers looked to battle back but Balderstone made sure to keep Oberlin rolling with a three-pointer at the 2:09 mark. The game heated up again in the final 50 seconds, but the Terriers never stood a chance as the Yeowomen finished out the commanding victory.

In the 27-point domination, Zinaich tallied her first career triple-double with 18 points, 10 assists, and 11 rebounds. Lombard added to the impressive night with a team-high 19 points, highlighted by five three-pointers. Spanier also finished in double-digits with four three-pointers and 14 points overall. In addition to the impressive individual performances, the team tallied 30 assists on 33 made baskets, and shot 55% from behind the arc.
