Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team capped off their abbreviated four-game season in heartbreaking fashion, ending on the wrong end of a 17-16 double overtime decision against the visiting Scots of Wooster on Wednesday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
After winning the draw to start the second overtime, the Scots earned a free-position attempt and Alexa Mellis cashed in her team-high fifth goal of the game to send Wooster home happy.
Senior
Tess Siciliano led the Yeowomen with six goals to run her career account to 94 while surpassing 100 points as she ends her Oberlin tenure with 106 tallies. Rookie
Audrey Koren added a hat trick effort, while
Reilly Jackman netted two scores off the bench to round out Oberlin's multi-goal performers.
Senior
Maranda Phillips also shined in her final game as she made a career-high 16 saves between the pipes and added four ground balls.
It was nip-and-tuck throughout the early going as Oberlin was clinging to a 5-3 lead but Wooster would snatch away the momentum with five straight scores to claim an 8-5 advantage with just under six minutes left in the opening half.
A cutting
Emily Shimabukuro would halt the Scots' run after finishing off a feed from Siciliano and
Bette Imhoff would deposit the final score of the opening session but the Scots would still carry a 9-7 edge into the break.
Wooster would increase its margin out to four, 12-8, in the early portion of the second half but five consecutive Oberlin goals put the Yeowomen back out in front. The spurt featured 8-meter finishes from Koren and Siciliano, and
Olivia Molfetta setting up Jackman on both of her tallies.
With the score later tied at 14, Phillips would stand tall in the cage, making six consecutive saves over a six-minute span to allow her team to build up a 16-14 cushion with 2:39 left in regulation on goals from Siciliano and Koren. However, in the final 100 seconds the Scots were gifted two free-position attempts that found their way into net to force the extra sessions.
Each team would trigger one shot in the first 3-minute overtime with Imoff's being turned away and after the teams flipped sides the Yeowomen would not get another chance as Hannah Shaw secured the draw to pave the way for the game-ender from Mellis.
Molfetta led Oberlin with eight draws but overall the Scots won the battle, 21-15.
Wooster improved to 8-1 on the year while Oberlin ends its shortened campaign at 2-2.
